Zermatt is nowhere near. If you really want it in the middle do it after Kandersteg.

On the way to Wengen or Brienzersee you will have to change trains in Spiez. Wherever you are on Brienzersee will depend on boat, train or bus.

You are on the trains, right? You can't get to either Wengen or Zermatt with a car - they are both car free.

We will be using trains

I am not set on any direction of which I should do.
Im really a little overwhelmed and maybe should pay someone to help me.
These were just the areas we wanted to visit

Should we not do Zermatt and just stay more local to BO. I just feel like we should see the Matterhorn since we wont be back

Im not really into seeing 10 different cities in ten days.
thanks

Kandersteg is on the way between Wengen and Zermatt. The best sequence (coming from Zurich direction) Lake Brienz, Wengen, Kandersteg, Zermatt.

We stayed in Wengen (one week) and then Kandersteg (two nights) this past summer. Very quick and easy train with I think one or two changes. Enjoy - ! we loved spending time hiking in both areas and probably could’ve added on a few days in the Kandersteg area. If you would like hotel recs lmk! In our experience It was not as crowded as everyone writes (we were there first few days July) particularly if you are an experienced hiker and begin your day early in the morning and get going on the trails. My son made it to the top of bluemlisalp hut / summit and was there with just a few other hikers. There are those that go just to see the lake for a photo and sit in the cafe by the lake shore which is where all the crowds are.

We stayed at hotel Bernerhof in Kandersteg - it faces the trail / pedestrian path that takes you to the gondola to get up to oeschinensee . We hiked two different paths up along the mountain overlooking the lake - from what I could see there is a lower and higher path (we did both) and they connect to do a loop (our adult kids did the loop one day - we didn’t ) - Doing half the loop seemed pretty doable for moderate level hikers. I believe it’s called the panorama trail but there are maps with detailed info . The lower path reaches a beautiful meadow and great spot for a picnic. You must wear hiking shoes - even with good shoes I slipped on a rocky area with running water (there are lots of little rivers running down) and was lucky I didn’t injure myself. .. those are the only two areas we visited in Switzerland on this trip as we went on to northern Italy after. I’ve also spent time in appenzell but that’s a completely different location but also very beautiful.

I was looking at Appenzell but after reading and researching trying not to see too much and be rushed everywhere. Im really excited to add this area for a couple nights between Wengen and Zermatt. Feel like my itinerary is somewhat coming together. mountains and lakes are our fav places other than the ocean.
This will be out first and only as my husband is 77 when we travel next Sept. ( decent shape walks 5 miles a day)

Thanks again for your help. appreciate it

Per current schedule, it will take 2 1/2 hours to get to Zermatt from Kandersteg with a single connection at Brig. Just be aware that the train from Brig to Zermatt goes from outside the Brig station in the street in front of the station (Bahnhofsplatz). It is a 20 minute change, so should be comfortable. Kandersteg to Brig is a scenic ride if you sit on the right hand side of the train.

Enjoy your planning - I use alltrails or similar to get a better understanding of difficulty of trails and also hiker feedback. Definitely use caution as it can be rocky with slippery gravel and wet with up/ down elevation. Happy travels!

Lots of people on this forum travel in their eighties, including me (solo female). Don't county anything out until you have to!
