Kanderstag

Anyone have tips on Kanderstag? Should we stay there overnight or stay elsewhere? We plan on flying into & staying in Switzerland for 2-3 nights before heading to Italy.

You can search here for Kandersteg, (e, not a) which is over the hills from the Lauterbrunnen Valley and easily reached by BLS train from Bern and Spiez.

Lola, a regular here has spoken well of her experiences there.

Lauterbrunnen is 1 hr 45 minutes away with 2 train connections at Spiez and Interlaken.
Unless your heart is set on Lake Como, Lago Maggiore is a good alternative right along your route at Stresa.
Lake Como will be a side trip from Milan. Just a thought.

We spent a day in Kandersteg a couple of years ago and really have a lovely time! We went because we were staying in Valais which is a short train ride under the mountains and we wanted to hike the area since we had not been before and had heard that it was beautiful. You can easily get there via train from Spiez if you are coming from the west / Lotschberg or Brig from the east. The train from Lotschberg is a car train (fun experience!) but I think that there is also a car for foot traffic. The one going from/to Brig is a regular SBB train.
The village in the valley is small but has everything you need and lots of places to stay. A bit touristy but the views of the mountains are pretty spectacular. From there you can take a gondola up from the valley floor to get to the Oeschininsee which is a spectacular lake surrounded by high, HIGH alpine peaks. A nice path leads from the top of the gondola to the lake. There are several good restaurants there as well as a lodge, the Berghotel Oschinensee. Lovely little place overlooking the lake - we wished we would have spent the night! There is a path leading around the lake on one side which is a fantastic walk. People swim in the lake as well.
That said, I have not been to the Lauterbrunnen area so can't compare the scenery. You'll have to judge for yourself by looking at pictures and getting advice from others!

Sam is right about the travel time. It would probably be 5 minutes in a helicopter. Or a couple of days on foot with the right equipment.
