Do you need reservations in advance? We are on the RS My Way tour starting August 11th. Is the half price Swiss card worth it? If anyone who has done this tour and has advice I would love to hear it
We did the math and found that paying per lift, as needed, was going to be less expensive than purchasing any of the discount cards because of the short amount of time you are there for the My Way tour. If there even 1 more day, it would have benefitted us to get a card. I suggest no reservations in advance because you have no idea what the weather will be like until you are there. We did not make ressies and were able to get 5 adult tix for what and when we wanted earlier this month.
Happy to answer any other questions you may have about the Alpine tour :)
And you can reserve the night before and download tix when the weather report is a bit firmer.
Reservations are mandatory to visit Jungfraujoch during the summer months. As John commented, you can reserve once you have an idea of what the weather will be.
The Jungfraujoch is quite expensive. A round trip from Grindelwald, including the required seat reservation, costs CHF 238. With a Swiss Half Fare Card, the price is reduced to CHF 124.
Thank you for your responses! Did you make other reservations for the MY Way tour? We were thinking of making reservations for the Sound of Music tour and the salt mines outside of Salzburg. We have been to a concert and dinner at the fortress a couple years ago, so we thought we would skip that this time. Did you have advanced reservations for Mt Blanc? Any recommendations for this tour would be great.
krpelzer1,
The absolute must reservations we've made both years is for the castles during our Fussen stay. Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. If you plan on going to one of those beauties, you will want to make reservations. We did not make ressies more than 3 days out for the Aguille di Midi whilst in Chamonix as we were watching the weather. Going as early in the day as you can during these heavy-crowds months is a must, IMO. We loved our time practically alone at the top when we booked a 7:30am lift.
We were just on this My Way Alps tour less than a week ago. We didn't make advanced reservations for any of our Swiss lifts. But, again, we went very early to the Shilthorn to avoid the crowds.
When in Salzburg, we did make reservations for the Panorama Sound of Music tour and thoroughly enjoyed it! Some of our group went to the Eagle's Nest and they made reservations just before we left the USA. The salt mines we visited did not really need reservations.
I'm happy to answer any other M W Alps query !

Thank you! Did anyone on your tour go to the salt mines? Best and worst of the trip?
krpelzer1,
3 of our 5 went to the oldest salt mine in the world - Salzwelten Hallstatt and really loved it! I wasn't with them but they all had a great time and said it was totally worth it. No ressies required for that excursion. They took a bus.
Best of the trip ? So difficult to pin it down, honestly. Loved the unbelievable beauty of Switzerland and Chamonix, was in complete awe whilst in the Alpe Di Suisi beneath the grand Dolomites, enjoyed the charm and lovely European -ness of Salzburg and fell in love with the history of King Ludwig and his family when visiting his majestic homes in Fussen, Germany. That doesn't narrow it down whatsoever but I love it all :)
Not-as-wonderful part of this last trip were the crowds not present last year and the heat which also didn't make an appearance for us in 2024. Even with these less-than-ideal factors, our memories are full of happiness ! I can't recommend this RS journey enough! It was worth every ounce of sweat which poured and every moment of being bustled in a busy touristy area. Yes, I want to return! :)
