We are standing in a very long line waiting for the last leg of the train to the summit. Apparently , there is a separate line for folks with timed reservations, Because if this, the train we thought we were getting on filled up, and we have another 25 minutes to stand in this crowd, indoors.
Question- what did we do wrong?
We bought tickets yesterday in Murren. The ticket agent told us we were leaving Murren at 9:58 am. He gave us a timetable of all the connections , which happened on time. We thought that was a timed reservation. The agent did not offer more info. How can we save others from this frustration? What didn't we know?
Timed reservations cost an additional 10 CHF. Read this.

Pat, I don’t have any info on this subject to be of help, but I just wanted to thank you. It’s nice when our fellow travel forum participants share what went well and also what to avoid or change next time.
I hope you enjoyed the rest of your time in that gorgeous region and had clear skies to see those spectacular mountains!
You left Murren too late. We were in the Berner Oberland for 5 nights very end of August and went up to the Jungfraujoch twice, no reservations, once to visit and another just for giggles riding the train through the tunnel. Zero line and 3/4 empty trains, but we left Wengen.at 8am.
My one trip up to the J was also an early one around 8am leaving from Gimmelwald. Maybe 3/4 full trains.
The weather makes it a bit of a gamble to make a reservation for a trip up to the J. It's not really worth the time if it's overcast when it's time to go. But you never know! I've seen amazing photos from up there with a clear blue sky looking down on the cloudcover below.
Thanks everyone, we had a gorgeous day with almost no clouds . It was spectacular. And rain is coming in tomorrow!
I was amazed at how long the line one for this last leg. I can't imagine what it would have been like pre-Covid. So, getting a timed reservation is probably worth it. Every other leg was Swiss precision.
Also, I erroneously assumed that a RT ticket gave us the option of the new, quick gondola down. Not so- that is another charge. As the trip up from Murren is about 2 hours, and we stayed at the summit about 2 hours, that made for a six hour adventure. A shorter descent would have been nice. (A believe a regular poster mentioned this a few weeks ago.)
I was just disappointed that the staff person at the train station didn't mention all of this, when we told him we didn't know what we were doing.
In any case, we had a fantastic day!
We left Murren at 8:58 am. Correction! The ticket was purchased the day before.
