Jungfraujoch advance tics and seat reservations needed Sept 8-18?

We will be in Wengen this year Sept 8-18. I've heard conflicting info about whether advance tickets and seat reservations are needed on the train to the Jungfraujoch during this time. Will there still be crowds at each station during this month?

Can we wait until we know the weather and reserve the night before or morning? If we catch the train at Kleine Scheidigg after hiking down from Mannlichen, does that save very much of the fare? We have the Swiss Half Fare for the Jungfraujoch and the BOP for Mannlichen. Thank you!

Advance tickets are never needed. Advance reservation is needed in the summer, with "advanced" defined as "before departure". You can safely wait till you are here to get both your ticket and reservation. If you wait till the morning of your trip you may not be able to get the departure of your choice though. Nevertheless, to give you an example: Today would be a perfect day to visit the Jungfruajoch. I just had a look, and there are still reservations available for pretty much every departure today.

Regarding walking down from Männlchen: Doing so indeed saves you one way to Kleine Scheidegg, but adds of course one way to Männlichen. You will find out that this does not save you money. The reason to go that route is just for the Panorama trail.

I would however go up the Jungfraujoch as early as possible, and then have lunch on the way down at Eigergletscher...

Definitely do not reserve until the day before when you are confident of the weather.
The cost for r/t to the Jungfraujoch is 69 CHF with the HFC from Kleine Scheidegg, and 100 CF from Wengen, so you save 31 CHF. The seat reservation is extra. And you will have to hike back to Maennlichen afterward, or pay another 15.50 to ride back to Wengen.

Thank you both! Great advice! Good to know I don't have to reserve until I know the weather. Thank you, carolyn
