JUNGFRAU pass - 3 days in Murren

Hi all!
Flying into Zurich Morning of Tues May 17th & plan on taking the next train to Lauterbrunnen and then up to Murren.
Staying in Murren until Friday morning to take a train to Dijon, France.

1st time to Switzerland so no idea about what is reasonable to expect regarding getting around the area(s) but plan to do 1/2 day/ day hikes & explore the sites around Murren and areas the RS guidebook that make sense.

Also, where can I find the rates for the gondolas, trains, etc. in the area to compare?

Would the Jungfrau pass (or some other) be worthwhile for us? The rail pass doesnt look that useful, but the Jungfrau may be.

Thank you!

Pricing is available at www.sbb.ch/en. The first price you see assumes you have a Half Fare Card, so you have to double it to get the undiscounted price. Also, if it is in dark black box with a "%" sign, that indicates a further discount available with a nonrefundable, train specific ticket. Click through as a guest, put in your name and date of birth, then check the "No Discount" box to see the full price.

The full fare ticket from Zurich airport to Muerren is 97.20 CHF.
The full fare ticket from Muerren to Basel (where you would catch a train to Dijon is 84.20 CHF
One way to get a discount now is to purchase 2 Saver Day Passes on line for those specific travel days for 52 CHF each.
https://www.sbb.ch/en/buying/pages/kontingent/kontingent.xhtml
These prices increase as you get closer to your travel dates, so buy them soon to get the 52 CHF price.

If you buy the Jungfrau Pass in advance, you're gambling on the weather at the summits. Granted, there are many cloudy days when hiking is still spectacular on the lower elevations, even if the peaks are fogged in.
The SBB site has the train fares. Keep in mind it's assumed that passengers have at least the half-care card, so the fares you see are already reduced.
Jungfraujoch from Murren is about $150 RT, one person, with Swiss Travel Pass, but I don't know that site, but someone here will have it.
The Swiss Travel Pass covers travel up to Murren and Wengen. If you show a pass for a discount, it counts as a day of use.
You will have a wonderful time in this beautiful area!

You have several options. The best pass will be determined by how you plan to spend your time. How many trips up and down the mountain you plan to take.

Jungfrau pass is most limited in area. https://www.jungfrau.ch/en-gb/jungfrau-travel-pass/

Berner-Oberland pass covers more area. https://www.regionalpass-berneroberland.ch/en/maps-bernese-oberland/

Swiss rail pass covers the most area. https://www.sbb.ch/en/leisure-holidays/inspiration/international-guests/swiss-travel-pass.html

The Jungfrau and BO passes do not cover the train from Zurich. That may be a deciding factor. Zurich to Murren is 60-70 CHF each way alone.

Keep in mind that to get to/from Murren from the valley, you need to take a train or cable car, unless you’re hiking.

You might also consider the Swiss Rail half price pass.

You can get a rough idea of the prices here:

https://lauterbrunnenhiking.wordpress.com/tips/

Those are from a few years ago, but there are links to the official new prices.
Also, you can get a good idea of the hikes around there by clicking on one of the areas listed near the top of this page:

https://lauterbrunnenhiking.wordpress.com/

Be aware that some of the higher hikes (Mannlichen, First, others) may be closed due to remaining snow in May.
Check with the tourist bureau in Murren or Lauterbrunnen. They'll know which are closed.

Thank you, Shoe!
I could find the Lautterbrunnan gondola, but Murren wont show up on the SBB site where you book point to point tickets. So its a little confusing where I should be looking.

Getting in Mid-day Tuesday with only another 2 full days and then leaving early Friday, I assume we will want to stay in the "immediate" area, whatever that might be..?? :) but would like to see some of top sites outside of spending time hiking. My RS book should get here tomorrow so will take a look but any advice for a first-timer on an itinerary is appreciated! I will look at the blog you sent me, it has a lot of great details & suggestions.

Thanks again!

The website and app want the little two dots—the umlaut--over the U in Murren. I have yet to figure out how to do that on my phone.

My first time in Switzerland was last Sept. and these were my favorites:

Walking down in Lauterbrunnen to Staubbach Falls. My sister and bro in law walked up to where you can go behind the falls. Then, you can walk further down lauterbrunnen valley if you like.

An early cable car ride up to the Schilthorn and breakfast in the revolving restaurant.

My favorite, the Mannlichen cable car from Wengen, won’t be open yet. So, I’d probably stay in and around Murren and Laurterbrunnen for your 2 days. You could walk from Murren to Gimmelwald, or even take the cable car if you don’t want to do a lot of walking.

Walk or take the bus to and from trummelbach falls. I found this much more impressive in person than I had seen in pictures and videos. So, i'm glad we saw them.

Carrie: “umlaut:” Didn’t know name of marks.
Just press and hold the “u” until choices pop up (üûūúù) 😊. Then just select mark you want.
I know how to do that on phone; don’t know how on computer.
When do you leave for Switzerland?

Hi carol, I have a lot of useless information from school. Actually, I googled it because I couldn’t remember what they were called. I knew if I just called them 2 little dots, someone would jump in with “they’re called umlauts.” 😊

I just tried pressing the U on the SBB app and you are absolutely right that it brings up all those choices. Super. Thanks so much!!! 😊

47 more days. Getting closer. 😊 I went through all my trips notes again and got those all organized. 29 pages only. That’s pretty good. Last trip I had 58 pages. 😊

Problem is there are 2 ways to get from Lauterbrunnen to Muerren (note, adding an "e" after the umlauted vowel is the universal work around when you can't type an umlaut). One is a gondola from the train station to Gruetschalp where you get another train to Muerren. The other is a bus from the train station to Stechelberg where you get a 2-stage cable car to Muerren.

If you type in Lauterbrunnen to Muerren at www.sbb.ch, it will show the prices for the bus/cablecar way and all the departure times. (every half hour and cost is 11.20 CHF).

PS. I am not seeing the gondola/train way, which generally means a major repair project is underway.

Thanks all. Sam, I saw a note somewhere that work was being done on the gondola line during that time so that makes sense. Any big difference between the 2 as far as accessing the village? I’m staying at hotel alpenruh. Have no idea how hard it it to get around since we will be walking.

You luck out. Alpenruh is 100 yds from the cable car station. Check it out on google maps. It would be a bit of a hike from the train station, which is on the other side of town.

I don't think much will be open in Mürren at that time in May, so Lauterbrunnen might be better to stay in. But the Bellevue Hotel in Murren has rooms with balconies that provide a spectacular view!
