Jungfrau marathon (and Switzerland itineraries)

Hi all!

My friend and I are doing the jungfrau marathon on 9/6/2025. We are hoping to also explore Switzerland either before or after the marathon.

Our tentative plan:
-8/31-9/3: explore somewhere else in Switzerland
-9/4-9/8: stay in Interlaken and do some hiking and eat good food and rest up

Would love to hear recommendations for places to explore in Switzerland and to see if it’s a good idea to stay in Interlaken for four nights (is there enough things to do?!). As for places to explore from 8/31-9/3, we were considering Bern/Zurich/Geneva/Basel.

Given the location of the finish line I would stay at one of the two hotels located at Kleine Scheidegg, or in Wengen or in Grindelwald. You should decide and book where you are staying first since it is a big event drawing other folks from out of town which could limit your options and cost you more as lodging capacity shrinks. Have you booked your flight yet and if so which airports are you flying into and out of? People can help with a logical itinerary of things to do places to go better with that information.

Explore somewhere else means what? Cities/museums/restaurants/shopping? Lake? Hiking? That affects the answer.

If you want to hike and enjoy the mountains in the time around the marathon, don’t stay in Interlaken. It’s a transportation hub and much nicer to stay in the mountains. Look into Grindelwald or Wengen. If you stay in Interlaken you’ll be bummed every time you have to commute back there.

Thank you for both of your suggestions on Grindelwald and Wengen! We might as well stay there.

As for activities for the first couple days — lake or city/shopping/museum might be of our interest since we will be in the mountains for the latter half of the trip! That being said, we are active people can always do more hiking if there are must-see places!

A few things to consider...
- Forget staying at Kleine Scheidegg. There are more than 3000 runners taking part. Those hotels are already booked out...

  • With your registration for the Marathon you get two train tickets to/from anywhere in Switzerland. but the first day you can use them will be 1/9. So maybe stay the first night or so in Zurich, enjoy the town, then travel to the BO.
