Hello, lovely forum!
We are traveling for three weeks 4/22-5/13. Our itinerary includes Hungary, Austria then Switzerland.
My question is about a jacket. The last time we went to Switzerland it was late June and my Eddie Bauer puffer jacket was enough. Even climbing the glacier atop Jungfrau, it was fine.
But I keep reading I need a waterproof jacket in May plus a puffer. We are trying to keep our packing to a minimum and two jackets seems a lot. Add sweaters, and it’s going to get tight.
Any advice is appreciated. Especially specific jackets by brand.
Thank you!!!!
I always take a raincoat, in addition to my puffer coat. This is the one I have.
It doesn’t take up much room in my suitcase. It’s large enough to fit over my puffer coat.
Instead of sweaters, which can be heavy, I would take one fleece to wear under the puffer or on its own.
I also like these for layers as they take up hardly any room in my suitcase:

My strategy is also to pack a lightweight rain shell large enough to fit over my puffer (as puffers tend to be mildly water-resistent at best, and soaked down is useless and slow-drying). Although my choice is also a tri-layer Patagonia when worn alone, as the lining tends to far outlast the 2-layer ones, for travel layering however I prefer a North Face 2-layer as it is thinner, lighter and more compressible.
I’m looking into these suggestions. Thank you!!
I also bring a packable, lightweight, waterproof raincoat. I have survived downpours with this raincoat that hits mid thigh, packs into its own pocket and weighs about 11 oz. The only negative is the the hood is too big, but I just wear a waterproof ball cap under it that also keeps the rain off of my face.
Sierra currently has the raincoat available in 2 colors. They also have the shorter Cloud Cap jacket in several colors.
Thank you! I’m loving all the real wearer advice!!
