Itirenary Check - Family of 4 (2 kids under 6)!

Hello!

After much research, here is what we're thinking for our family of 4 (2 adults, a 6 year old and a 2.5 year old) - we will be in Switzerland from may 13-May22. Our 6 year old LOVES trains and has been reading/watching the different train rides so our trip will be very train focused. Day trips, not a lot of hikes.

Land in Zurich (6 AM) - head to Chur, settle in

Next day Chur -> St Moritz to experience the Bernina Express, spend the day in Moritz, take the train back to Chur (likely do a local train and not be tied down to Bernina's route)

Another night in Chur? Or head to Lauterbrunnen area? *hoping to take part of the Glacier Express or a local train on that route to Andermatt or Visp; and Visp to Lauterbrunnen

4 nights in the Lauterbrunnen area (or Wengen) with trips to Jungfraujoch and/or Schilthorn

Lucerne for 2 nights (19 and 20)
Night in Zurich (21)
Fly back on the 22

Thoughts?

If you don't have an early flight out of Zurich, spend the last night in Lucerne. It's very easy to get to the Zurich airport from Lucerne. The train ride is 1+ hour, and the train goes directly to the Zurich airport .
I think the Bernina Express route is an incredible experience. We rode the route twice, and because the light changes, it was different each way. We stayed in Pontressina, not glitzy St Moritz.
Have a wonderful trip in the beautiful country.

Have you studied the rail map of Switzerland, with the scenic routes highlighted?

If you want to ride the Glacier Express to go from Chur to Lauterbrunnen, you have two options as to routes. Either way I suggest you break up the long journey with an overnight somewhere.

Option 1: Glacier Express from Chur to Andermatt (ride the actual GE for this; otherwise you will have to change trains at Disentis for the rack railway section). At Andermatt, take the train the short distance to Göschenen , where you can pick up one of the many trains traveling the Gotthard Pass route toward Luzern. You can either stay on the train (probably changing at Arth-Goldau to get to Luzern), or leave the train at Flüelen and ride a boat the rest of the way to Luzern. This will take a bit longer but the scenery is beautiful, and the boat is fun because the kids can run around a bit. My family (with older children) did this in September and everyone loved it.

Overnight in Luzern and the next day take the scenic Golden Pass route to Interlaken Ost, changing there for Lauterbrunnen.

Option 2: Stay on the Glacier Express to Brig, changing there to a train going to Kandersteg for your overnight. This is pretty little mountain village and better for an overnight than Brig. Next day continue to Spiez and then to Interlaken, etc.

I suggest this instead of continuing to Visp, because the trains between Visp and Spiez spend most of their time in a very long deep tunnel. You can see this on the map—-tunnels are indicated by dashed lines (not dotted lines). There is still a tunnel on the way to Kandersteg from Brig, but it is much shorter. And you will likely see some of the car-trains on this route (trains with flatbed cars carrying passenger cars through the tunnel). That would be fun for your train-loving child to see.

Thank you Lola!

@Lola - thank you for breaking down the glacier journey past Andermatt. We didn’t look at the actual train break up - so this is great info. We do plan to stay in Lucern for 2 nights, so maybe we just switch that. And then go from Lauterbrunnen to Zurich (realize this will repeat part of the journey).

Thanks Pat! We keep revisiting our decision to not go all the way to Tirano, figuring it’ll be too much train. Do you think it’s still worth it till Moritz? We plan to just stay in Chur.
