Itinerary Review - Alps Tour

I'm planning a 30+ day excursion to the French and Swiss Alps with emphasis on hiking with some wine touring thrown in at the end. It's longer to help us slow down and savor each area a bit more. I'd appreciate any feedback on the following itinerary. I'm particularly wondering about whether splitting days on either side of the Lauterbrunnen Valley is a good idea, or if it's just unnecessary effort, and if the time allotted here is really too much. Also, whether I should invest another day in Lausanne and Murten. We have been to Paris, Alsace and Champagne regions before but are looking for deeper exploration this time. Thanks for the thoughts!

  1. Near Paris - 4 nights
  2. Lausanne - 2 nights
  3. Chamonix - 4 nights
  4. Zermatt - 3 nights
  5. Appenzell - 3 nights
  6. Gimmelwald or Murren - 4 nights
  7. Wengen - 3 nights
  8. Murten - 1 night
  9. Colmar/Alsace - 4 nights
  10. Champagne Region - 4 nights

Gimmelwald, Murren, and Wengen are on opposite sides of the same valley, so I don't think you need to have go from one to the other. You could do everything in the Oberland region easily from one base.

Lots of great hiking opportunities there!

We actually enjoy staying in both Wengen and Mürren on one trip, as you have planned. There are hikes you can do right from your door in each village, and it is nice to have the different views and dining options offered in both. Plus it saves time (and money) to avoid transport from one side of the valley to the other multiple times.

Yes, Wengen is a nice car-free village, but I don't see it as a base for hikes (maybe short walks). The only one I'd take from there is cable car up to Mannlichen then hike to Kleine Scheidegg. That is a fantastic hike, but one can also get to Mannlichen via Grindelwald by cable car.
If you'd use Grindelwald as your other base, you'd also have access to these hikes:
Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidegg
Schynige Platte to First (6 hrs)
(cable car up to) First to Bachalpsee (Google image it)
First to Grosse Scheidegg and bus down to Grindelwald.
