Hi All:
We are visiting switzerland in late september. We have 10 nights. We are going to fly into Milan (MXP) and fly home from Zurich.
Our Plan:
1. Lugano 2 or 3 nights
2. Chur or St. Moritz 1 night
3. Zermatt 1 night
4. Wengen 3 nights
5. Lucern 2 nights.
My big dilemma is #2.
1. Should we skip it altogether and go directly from Lugano to Zermatt? and if so, what is the best way to get to Zematt in the most scenic form of transportation?
2.Or go to chur then zermatt. If thats your opinion then again, how to get to chur from lugano and chur to zermatt in the most scenic way.
3. Or St. Mortiz with the same transporations questions.
Thanks for any input.
If you want a scenic train in that area it would be a shame to miss the Bernina Express. From Lugano, Bernina Express has bus service to Tirano (Italy), where you catch the famous train and take it north to Chur through the Alps and over the Landwasser Aqueduct. Google Bernina Express for all the details.
Thank you Darren
So I can actually not even stay over in chur if we decided to eliminate another stop over.
As it was suggested, there is a train itinerary Lugano - Goschenen - Andermatt - Brig - Zermatt, it is not Bernina but still sports a significant amount of landscape. Even Lugano - Locarno - Domodossola - Brig - Zermatt has a very scenic (but lower in elevation) section between Locarno and Domodossola; I would prefer the one through Andermatt. In both cases you save a day on the long Bernina detour and you can add a day in Zermatt (better than Chur or St.Moritz IMHO).
