Booked on a cruise out of Rome on June 12, 2020. Would like to experience Switzerland for the first
time beforehand. Thinking of flying into Zurich on 6/7 and making my way to Grindelwald (Top of Europe) and then getting back to Rome sometime on 6/11. I'm assuming train would be best otherwise I have to fly from Zurich. My concerns are: Going all this way
and weather doesn't cooperate on the few days I have there. The train ride to Rome is 8 hrs so this will kill a whole day.
Perhaps I shouldn't do Switzerland at all during this trip and perhaps concern Italian alps instead. By the way I have already been to Rome.
I'd appreciate thoughts and opinions on the best way to see the most in the short time I have. Thanks in advance
The Dolomites region in Italy would give you a great idea of Switzerland and save you many travel hours on this trip...and depending on your hotel cancelation date possibly give you a chance to move location in case of bad weather.
We just did Switzerland and Northern Italy in early September. We did 3 full days in the Bernese Oberland (similar to your plan). IMO, Switzerland is spectacular and worth the effort. As others can attest, forecasting weather in the Alps is a crap shoot. Our forecast was for cold rain even 1 day before we arrived. Turns out, we got 3 beautiful days. Went to Schilthorn twice, and could have gone 3 times, but we had so many other things to do. I think choosing 3 days in June really increases your chances of good weather. I have not done the Italian Alps. Since all of the trains from the area run south through Milan, I think you would only save an hour or 2 versus coming down from Grindlewald (depending on where you are in the "Italian Alps"). I say go for it, but I am extremely biased!!!!! Good luck..
Yes, go with your first hunch. You can get lousy weather anywhere you pick, so why not be an optimist?
