Itinerary help for July family trip, specifically after Zermatt, before flying out of Zurich

Hi Everyone, I’m so grateful to have found this site, I've learned so much from you all, I wish I would have found it sooner.
It’s been a long process trying to navigate this trip and I would love your input with our itinerary, especially the last leg starting with July 14th.
We’re a family of four, two boys ages 20 and 18, coming to Switzerland for the first time this July 8-18th from the US. We’re flying in/out of Zurich, (I can’t change that).
We are very active, hiking, water activities, etc., and looking for adventures more so than museums. We will be traveling by train, thinking we’ll get the Swiss Travel Pass since we will be all over the region.
I realize this is a lot of information and questions, so I numbered them within our itinerary.

July 8th-July 10: Arrive Zurich 8:00 am- train to Lucerne, we have 2 nights in an Airbnb in Weggis,(can not cancel without a fee) walking distance to Mt. Rigi.
1 )Do you recommend Mt. Titlis and/or Stoos Ridge Hike for a day?

July 10-July 14th: Express train to Interlaken, 4 nights in Airbnb in Niederried Bei, -5 min walk to Brienzersee, (I can cancel this Airbnb).

2) I think I’ve read to sit on the right side of the train from Lucerne to Interlaken?
3) Do you all recommend the Brienz Rothorn Bahn? We thought we’d take it half way and hike half. We also plan on doing day trips to Lauterbrunnen, Murren and Kandersteg.

July 14: Plan to head to Zermatt this morning. Have one night booked here (can cancel).
I have read lots of suggestions to not bother if the weather is not good. Have one night booked here (can cancel). Plan on doing Klein Matterhorn this day.

July 15th:Full day in Zermatt, maybe Five Lakes Walk

**July 15-17th- We had planned to head to Montreux for the next two nights however, I just learned it is the Jazz Festival, which we don’t have any interest in and can only imagine the crowds. We’re hoping to do Chateau de Chillon and the Fort across from it but I’m so afraid it will just be too crowded.
4) Thought about Geneva instead but not sure how much interest we have in that area and if it will be crowded due to the Festival too? And/or a day trip to Annecy, is it worth it?

5) Should we stay longer in Zematt instead? Or head back to the Jungfraujoch region and stay in the mountains, since we’re staying near a lake in the beginning?

6) I would love to get a taste of southeastern Switzerland too but I don’t know where (Lugano?) And if it’d be possible from Zermatt, If we even go due to weather or if weather isn’t looking promising do we skip Zermatt and head southeast from Interlaken area instead?

7) Also, the Gelmerbahn looks so intriguing, is it worth the trip to get there and where could we squeeze it in?

July 18th: We fly out of Zurich at 1:00 pm, have hotel reservations in Thalwil for the 17th to be closer to the airport, but can cancel.
I realize we have some time if we need to travel from a little further away that morning.

Again, I know this is a lot of information and questions, if you have tips for any parts of it, I appreciate whatever you have to offer. I’m hoping to get this finalized soon so I can finally get some sleep;)
Thank you!

Welcome to the Rick Stes forums! You can get lots of good help with your trip here, but you should start by editing your post. I believe you mean to go to Zermatt 2 nights on July 14-15, not to Zurich. This is going to confuse others who want to respond. You can edit your post to correct this—-return to this post when you are logged in, and look for the “edit/delete” option at the end, lower left. Make sure you touch “edit”, not “delete”. That will bring up your post in a form you can edit and change.

I will be back with more comments later.

Thank you Lola! Yes, I meant Zermatt, (it's now fixed). As you can see, I need help as I'm very sleep deprived from trying to plan;)

Good job on the edit. You are a quick learner.

I will preface my comments by saying that we have been to Switzerland with one or both of our 2 adult sons 6 times over the past 20 years, starting when they were in their early 20’s. Our goals were adventure and hiking, not cities or museums. We quickly learned that one cannot “do it all” in one trip. We did not get to Zermatt until our 3d trip, did not spend time on Lake Luzern until the 5th (we enjoyed staying in Weggis on that trip), and did not reach Ticino (the southern, Italian-speaking canton) until the 6th, just this past September.

On the other hand, all visits but one included 3-5 days in the Berner Oberland.

All these places are worthy of a visit, but one should limit the number of bases to avoid too much travel time, and too many hotel/apartment changes. You really have enough with Weggis/Luzern, Berner Oberland (Niederried b. Interlaken), Zermatt and Thalwil. I would suggest adding one night each to the Berner Oberland (so much to see and do there) and Zermatt (one night is not enough to give a good chance of seeing the Matterhorn).

You might also consider changing your last night before the flight to Bern instead of Thalwil. Bern is right on your way between Zermatt and Zurich; for some trains you have to change in Bern anyway. And there are hourly trains from Bern directly into the airport, taking a bit more than an hour. The Bern Oldtown is a lovely place to stay and wander, with lots of restaurants with outside seating. Swimming in the river there is popular (even Rick Steves recommends it) but it requires a strong swimmer due to the current.

If you would like to visit Ticino as well, You would have to skip Zermatt, but I can make some suggestions for this change if you like.

Also, if you are spending 2 nights in Weggis, the logical hike would be on Rigi itself. There are lots of trails to explore, many with beautiful views over the lake to the mountains beyond. You can hike up from Weggis on the Mark Twain “discovery trail” and take the cablecar down from Rigi Kaltbad to Weggis at the end of the day. Or ride the cablecar up and do your hiking up higher on the mountain. It’s all good. See photos and hike suggestions here:

I cannot compare this option to Stoos Ridge and Mt. Titlis, as we have never hiked at either one. (I have skied at Mt. Titlis, but that was 50 years ago and it was very different). I know that Stoos Ridge is very popular, one of those “Instagram hits”, but I have read that it can be very crowded because of that. AS in “nose to tail” hiking with other groups. Titlis offers other experiences in addition to hiking, so might be more interesting to your sons.

Weather may decide for you. Stoos has fog on top or on the lake several days. It is close to 5 miles from the entrance, through Stoos and walk the trail. Titlis is divided with the mountain top and Trubsee. There is the 4 lakes hike that can be shortened riding chairlifts.

I think you’re not allowing enough time in each spot to really accomplish what you want. 6 bases in 10 days is going to be insane and you’re going to spend half of your time moving. Example, you have 1 full day in Luzern, but you want to do Rigi, Stoos + actual Luzern. Then you’re not staying in the mountains so you’re going to be commuting a ton from Brienz. Then only 1 day in Zermatt, with a hope you get lucky with the weather to actually see the Matterhorn. Then moving again 2 more times. It’s just too much for the time you have. There is plenty to see in 3 bases and you'll actually get to do more by moving less.

I’d recommend
Weggis 3 nights / Wengen 4-5 nights / Zermatt 2-3 nights
OR
Weggis 4 nights / Wengen 3 nights / Lake Brienz 3 nights

July 8 - Explore Luzern historic area, settle in to lodging
July 9 - Stoos or Rigi or boat ride to Fluelen
July 10 - Stoos or Rigi or boat ride to Fluelen
July 11 - Luzern > Wengen - explore village, settle in
July 12 - Mannlichen/Royal Walk/Kleine Scheidegg/optional Jungfraujoch or Grindelwald First (adventure activities if you want to wait in lines) or from Kleine Scheidegg keep hiking to Wengernalp and return to Wengen
July 13 - Lauterbrunnen/Murren/Schilthorn/optional hiking or paragliding or via feratta -- if you guys are up for some adventure, paragliding from Murren is an epic experience
July 14 - Lake Brienz + Brienzer Rothorn (I don’t think you’re going to want to hike all the way to the top, plus the best part of the train ride is the second half, I'd just ride the train all the way up and then do some hiking up at the top if you want)
July 15 - Schynige Platte (great ridge hiking) — or move to Zermatt if you want extra time there
July 16 - Morning train from Wengen > Zermatt (explore the village)
July 17 - Gornergrat, 5 Lakes
July 18 - Zermatt > Zurich Flughafen (airport) — If you leave around 6 in the morning you can easily make it to the airport 3 hours ahead of time, no need to move again

In this itinerary, I would have suggested you reverse it and do Zermatt > Wengen > Luzern to be even closer to the airport at the end, but since you say you can't cancel, this is the next best option. Another option to consider is something like this, with even less moving:

July 8 - Historic Luzern
July 9 - Stoos or Rigi

July 10 - Stoos or Rigi
July 11 - Gotthard Express - Boat Fluelen + tunnel Lugano + boat Morcote
July 12 - Luzern > Wengen
July 13 - Mannlichen day
July 14 - Murren day
July 15 - Move to Lake Brienz + Boat ride
July 16 - Brienzer Rothorn
July 17 - Kandersteg/Oeschinensee
July 18 - Brienz > Zurich Flughafen

  1. I like Stoos over Pilatus if you do Schilthorn while in Murren
  2. Yes, right side
  3. Brienzer Rothorn is a beautiful ride
  4. Skip Geneva/Annecy - no time
  5. See suggestions above
  6. I wouldn’t feel like you’re missing out by not seeing all sections of Switzerland. They’re not THAT different. My second itinerary suggestion gives you time for a day trip to do the Gotthard Express, which would allow you to experience the Italian region of Switzerland
  7. Skip Gelmerbahn. No time and you’ll have plenty of other great activities
