Hi, wondering if anyone could give a suggestion for a home base for July 31-August 3. We have a VRBO for 5 nights July 26-31 in Wengen. I was originally going to go to Lucerne for 3 nights but I am having trouble finding accommodations and I have heard that it is very busy/touristy/crowded. Was thinking possibly Bern? Our flight departs at 1 pm on the 3rd. Since we are going to immerse ourselves in the mountains for the first part of our trip, we are looking for more city/history. Thanks in advance!

You are going to have trouble finding lodging in any of the major tourist hubs at this point. August 1st is Swiss National Day and it's a really cool thing to experience in the mountains - festivals, parades, fireworks, bonfires up in the mountains to make it all lit up..... If you can add on to your VRBO to stay in Wengen until August 2nd, then you could go to Bern for 1 night before departure. That's what I'd be doing if I were you.

Bern is not a bad choice if you can't find any accommodations in Luzern. You can get anywhere on a daytrip pretty easily from there in case you get bored. For example I managed a daytrips to top of Mt Titlis, Lake Oeschinensee : https://www.oeschinensee.ch/en/ and to see the Matterhorn from there.
