Itinerary help

Hi Everyone!
We are headed to Switzerland in mid-July this year and are a family of 4. We are hoping to start our trip around Lake Geneva, to visit the vineyards, the Chateau Chillon and day trip to Gruyeres and chocolate factory. We have 4 nights to stay somewhere...where would you suggest? I've seen Vevey, but wouldn't mind somewhere slightly off the beaten track, in countryside/mountains. Would Bern be a good day trip?
Our next stop is 5 nights in Murren. We have plans to see quite a bit of the mountains, do a few easy hikes, visit Geissbach waterfalls, etc. Is Murren an easy enough base for all of this? Or should we cut back to say, 3 nights, and then spend the rest in Interlaken where it will be easier to get around? We also plan on having a car, as we'll need it for stage one (see above) and the next stage. Is this a mistake?
Our next step is heading to Lake Maggiore. Ideally we'd like to stay in Stresa, but I really want to see Valle Verzasca and some of the valley areas. Is this doable as a day trip from Stresa? Is Stresa actually the nicest place to stay on the lake? Any thoughts? We'll then fly back to Sydney from Milan.
Thanks for your help!

  • 5 nights in Muerren is perfect. There are lots of easy hikes on both sides of the valley. Don't miss the Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidigg trek and also Muerren to Grutschalp, First to Bachalpsee, Northface hike. So many to enjoy! Buy a Berner Oberland Regional Pass for the lifts and trains.

  • Interlaken, No. Not so charming as the mountain towns.

  • No car. It is not useful and you'd just have to pay to park it. Dump it in Interlaken and take the trains. Rent one again, if you must, when you are ready to leave the area.
