Itinerary Help - 6 Nights in Switzerland

Hello,

I am traveling to Switzerland for the first time with my 60 year old mother and sisters (we are in our late 20s). I am trying to piece together our itinerary for our visit in July. We would like to experience Switzerland as much as possible without feeling rushed. We are interested in quaint towns, easy/moderate hikes and scenic views. We plan to use train transport for the duration of the trip.

Here's what we have so far:

Day 1:
Arrive in Zurich early morning
Train to Lucerne
Sleep in Lucerne

Day 2
Sightseeing in/around Lucerne
Sleep in Lucerne

Day 3
Train to Interlaken early morning
Sleep in Murren or Grindelwald

Day 4
Sightseeing in/around Berner Oberland
Sleep in Murren or Grindelwald

Day 5
Train to Montreaux afternoon
Sleep in Montreaux

Day 6
Sightseeing in Montreaux (Chillon Castle)
Train to Zurich afternoon/evening

Day 7
Depart out of Zurich

I'm wondering if the itinerary allows enough time in Berner Oberland or if we should depart from Lucerne sooner or skip Montreaux? I'd also like advice on which train is the best option for each route (we would like to take the Golden Pass whenever it makes sense) and how much time to budget for traveling. Lastly I welcome any activity suggestions for each destination.

Many thanks in advance!

You could easily enjoy another day in berner oberland. It is simply beautiful.
Montreux is nice and relaxing but i would opt for another day in the mtns instead.

You've only planned one full day for Berner Oberland with two half days for smaller activities. Unless you have really strong reasons why you have to see Montreux and Chillon castle I'd recommend against going there. This would give you another day in the area to hedge your outdoor interests against bad weather.

There are castles around the Thunersee but I've never been to any of them so I can't comment on how they compare with Chillon.

Other things to see:

  • the usual suspects of Lucernce
  • Swiss Transport museum in Lucerne
  • Ballenberg outdoor museum
  • Aare gorge
  • St. Beatus Caves
  • Trümmelbach falls

To best fit your interests, add more time to the Berner Oberland by skipping Montreux; don't reduce your stay in Luzern.

Take the scenic train from Luzern from Platform 12 that leaves at 6 minutes past each hour, to Interlaken Ost. It's now called the Luzern-Interlaken Express, but used to be called part of "Golden Pass."
At Interlaken Ost, change to the train on Platform 2 to go to Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald (Platform 2A goes to Lauterbrunnen (which is where you make travel connections to get to Mürren) and Platform 2B goes to Grindelwald) -- same train; the train carriages separate at Zweilütschinen, on the way, so make sure the sign on the train carriage that you get on at Interlaken Ost says the right destination for you, or you'll end up in the wrong valley!

EDIT: (the train carriages separate at Zweilütschinen, not Wilderswil.)

Here's the Swiss transportation web site for more details:

And the Rick Steves Switzerland guidebook gives detailed instructions on how to get to each place and great hikes and views.

I agree with David and Linda: skip Montreux, especially since the poster said she didn't want to "feel rushed". Further, I'd say I like Chillon Castle, but LOVE the Berner Oberland, so time is better spent there, in my opinion.

Just one little correction to Linda, I think. Unless something changed this year, the Grindelwald/Lauterbrunnen train always separates at Zweilutschinen, not Wilderswil. But the original poster need not worry about which town, as long as she sees "Lauterbrunnen" on the side of her train car as she leaves Interlaken Ost.

Shoe, thanks for catching my mistake. I meant Zweilütschinen for where the train carriages separate to split up into the two valleys, not Wilderswil. Wilderswil is where I change trains when I'm going up to Schynige Platte.

I've edited my previous entry, accordingly.

Thank you everyone for the detailed advice - this is incredibly helpful. We have decided to stay a third night in Murren instead of Montreux.
