Itinerary for 3 nights in Lauterbrunnen?

What is the best itinerary for 3 nights in Lauterbrunnen? My husband and I are traveling from San Francisco with our 2 boys ages 7 & 9 in early to mid-June and we think they would enjoy hiking to Wengen and/or Murren, seeing the water falls, going to the Jungfrau. We are staying in a lovely rental in the Lauterbrunnen Valley. Any tips on itinerary and logistics would be great. Any other tips on what to do or where to eat are appreciated. Thanks!

Best,
Suzanne

Suzanne,

There are all kinds of possibilities. Here are a few to consider......

  • Take the Cable Car from Lauterbrunnen to Grütschalp, and then hike to Mürren on the trail that parallels the BLM railway line. Have a nice lunch in Mürren and then hike down to Gimmelwald (the small path is paved as I recall). Do some exploring in Gimmelwald and then take the Schilthornbahn down to Stechelberg. From there take the Post Bus to Trummelbach Falls and then walk or bus back to Lauterbrunnen.
  • Take the Cable Car to Grütschalp as mentioned above, and then the BLM railway to Mürren. When you arrive in Mürren, take the Allmend-Hubel Funicular to the top and then hike back down through the scenic alpine meadows. After you get back to Mürren, follow the route suggested above to Gimmelwald, etc.

Have a look at the RS Switzerland guidebook for other ideas, and also this website.....

Both the Jungfraujoch and the Schilthorn are beautiful if the weather is clear, but it is a long haul up to the Jungfraujoch and both are quite expensive. If your boys are up to a long train ride, do it, but be aware it take much of a day. I think we left on the first train and did not get back to Wengen until about 14:00. Look into the Berner Oberland pass and perhaps the Swiss Half-Fare card (if you are doing other travel in Switzerland) to help control costs.

As to eating, it is expensive. We get lunch or coffee at the Airtime Cafe at least once while in Lauterbrunnen, and the views cannot be beat from Alpenruhe in Muerren. Pizza at the Eiger Guesthouse in Muerren is good, if pricey. The hotels in Lauterbrunnen have good restaurants with Swiss specialities like roesti and fondue. Again pricey, but so is all of Switzerland. If you have a kitchen, dinner in will save you a lot.

Rent bikes in Wengen, jump on the next train up to Kleine Scheidegg (bikes go on a special car just for that purpose), and then ride the bikes back down into Wengen. Very easy ride for the whole family, all downhill, with views across the valley and surrounding mountains. The kids will love it!

There are loads of great trails in the area, but 3 that I consider "classic",
and they follow the 3 great ridges. Ken has mentioned the first, which goes
from Grutschalp to Murren. As he mentioned, you can go down to Gimmelwald from
Murren, and that's great. But one can also hike uphill on a diagonal from the
Murren cablecar station, and eventually end up at the restaurant at
Spielbodalp. There you can get a drink and sit at a picnic table and watch the
cows. You can see that trail and others here:

The second goes from Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidegg. The walk itself is
about 2 hours, and we save this for the sunniest day, because of the panoramic
views. (Leave in the morning--most afternoons the peaks cloud up!) Take the
train from Lauterbrunnen to Wengen, then a 5 min walk to the cable car
station, where you take the cable car up to Mannlichen. Once up, you can look
left at a 30 min up and back trail to a lookout point. If you look right
there is the main tra‎il that leads toward the Jungfrau mounta‌in, which takes
1.5 hrs and you end up in Kleine Scheidegg, where you can catch a train down
to Wengen and finally Lauterbrunnen. Great panoramic views all along the
route.

The 3rd classic trail is from First to Bachalpsee. Take the Lauterbrunnen
train down to Zweilutschinen. Get off to switch to the train going up to
Grindelwald. Once in Grindelwald, walk about 20 min further into town to get
to the cablecar station, where you take it all the way up to First. From there
walk south to Bachalpsee. There are trail signs, and it is about 45 min each
way. On a sunny day, you can get great pictures of the mountains reflected in
Bachalpsee, which is a small lake. Just Google image "Bachalpsee" and you'll
see what I mean.

Finally, if you get a foggy or misty day, you can walk further up the Lauterbrunnen valley to Trummelbach Falls, which is about an hour each way (or take the PostBus). Google image it to see why it is worth seeing, and the nice thing is you can actually see it just fine on a dreary and foggy day.

As for costly meals, yes, that can be true. However, we make make good use of the Coop and Migros stores as much as possible. There is a Coop store pretty much opposite the Lauterbrunnen train station. While there, try a bottle of "Rivella" soft drink, which is unique to Switzerland.
