Itinerary Copenhagen to Murren/Grindelwald to Chamonix

Greetings - I'd appreciate your feedback on this itinerary. I know it's a lot of travel but I've never been to Murren/Grindelwald and I'm hoping to share my fabulous memories of refugio hiking out of Chamonix with my adult son. Wish we had more time but we don't. Starting in Copenhagen (fly to Zurich).

  1. Copenhagen to Murren/Grindelwald. We are still debating whether to use Murren or Grindelwald as home base for 3/4 nights. The main issue is getting there. What do you think of this?

Fly Copenhagen to Zurich in the morning. Depart Zurich at 1:01 pm, take IC1 to IC61 to R62 to 141 to 2460
Takes about 3 hours. Arrives around 4 pm

  1. Murren to Chamonix (we'll do a few nights hiking between refugios). Here's an option:
    8:51 AM (Sunday) - 1:45 PM (4 hr 54 min)

  2. Our first refugio out of Chamonix will be the Refuge du Montenvers, hike to Refue-plan-aiguille.
Should we stay in Chamonix that first night (since the travel from Murren is 5 hours and multiple transfers)? Or just enjoy the views and get all the way up to the Refugio in one day (close to 7 1/2 hours total travel time but so pretty!).

What do you think?

Thank you!

If Murren or Grindelwald, why not Wengen, car free mountain village in between the two?

Between Murren and Grindelwald, Murren for your purposes, which seems to be big hikes in the big mountains. Wengen would work about the same.

But yeah, Murren.

I think that you should be using www.sbb.ch/en and not google maps. The link you give starts in the city centre not at the airport and the IC1 departure time is neither (although might work if it began at some random spot in the airport and included walking time to the train). Make sure that Price Display is set to full fare if you don't have a Half Fare Travelcard

If you have around 6-7 nights to spend hiking in the alps, I think you should pick 1-2 spots that are close to each other. Spending 1/2 of a day getting to Murren and then almost a full day getting to a refugio in Chamoix is eating up too much of your short time. You could do a hut to hut hike all through the Berner Oberland OR through the areas around Chamonix. I'd pick one and really enjoy it instead of spending so much time moving.

If you want to do Switzerland, you can find tons of mountain huts to hike between for 6-7 nights. For example (one of many examples) Hotel in Grindelwald > Grindewald First > Mannlichen > Obersteinberg > hotel break in Murren > Rotstockhutte > Oeschinensee > Kandersteg --- or you could stay in Murren for a few nights and then do part of what I listed above. There are endless options, based on skill level.

I'm not as versed on Chamonix, but I know that you can easily do a week hiking in that area as well and/or combine it with hotel stays in Chamonix or surrounding areas close by. If you do Chamonix, I'd fly into Geneva, not Zurich. Train Station "Geneve-Aeroport"

And yes, use SBB.ch/en, not Google. The Zurich airport is called "Zurich Flughafen" and if you go to Murren it's "Muerren BLM" or Grindelwald "Grindelwald"
