Italy/Switzerland Sep 2025

We are doing a Backroads Hiking Trip through the Alps starting in Chamonix, France and ending in Turin, Italy. We would also like to visit the Berner Oberland area as an extension so would welcome suggestions as to the best way to travel from Turin to Berner Oberland.

Train
Turin > Milan
Milan > Spiez
Spiez > Interlaken Ost
and then from there you can choose your final destination in the BO (Grindelwald, Wengen, Lauterbrunnen, Murren, etc.)
Depending on where you end up and connections it will probably take somewhere around 6 hours.

Wsauter, are you hiking some or all of the Tour du Mont Blanc route? That has been on my bucket list for a long time, so I'd love to hear more about your hike, if you are inclined to share those details.

Webdweeb, if you want to hike the Tour du Mont Blanc with a small guided group, I highly recommend MT Sobek. They offer 2 versions, a 12-day one and a shorter “express” one (which we did).

They use local guides from the Compagnie des Guides de Chamonix, but you can also book directly with the guide company for a less expensive trip (staying in huts rather than nice hotels, probably less English spoken).

Lola, I remember reading about Mt Sobek when I first researched the TMB several years ago, but I put it on the back burner because I couldn't find a travel partner that was willing to do the trek with me. Nowadays I would probably lean toward the express route as well-having a real bed in a private room to sleep in every night is really nice after a long hike day, not to mention a shower and brewed coffee.

I have to admit that I thought pretty hard about trying to weave one of those into our trip (I also looked at similar trips in the Dolomites), but May is too early for the TMB (or the Dolomites HTH trips) unless you have technical training (which I do not!).
