It's that time again - first 'cow parade' in Appenzell

The cow parades have begun. Traditionally called, in various regions, Alpabfahrt, Alpabzüge, Öberefahre, Désalpe, you can find these parades all over Switzerland. I just received a notification of the first one of the season happening in Appenzell this Saturday Aug. 19. They will continue on into the fall.

Dates are sometimes decided last minute as these are actually a part of the farmer’s yearly cycle of work and as such are not easily run according to a specific schedule. This is also why they might arrive in town later than expected, depending on how long it takes them to walk down from the alpine pastures, taking adequate rests along the way.

Every region has their own traditional dress - Appenzell in the very colourful red and yellow with flowers on the farmer’s hats but usually not on the cows, in the Berner Oberland the cows get the flowers, sometimes extravagantly so.

To find ones on specific dates it might be helpful to use the above German and/or French words when you search.

Many will be listed with Switzerland tourism and of course the local tourist office can also help you out.

Love this! Having grown up on a dairy farm in south central PA this would be a treat!

Thanks, Maureen! That is a week early for us Appenzell: we’ll be there the following weekend. Seems early!

@newnona Yes, it is a treat for sure!

@Laurel, it is early, but it was the same last year. Perhaps Appenzell starts earlier than other places. I don’t know enough about it to know why that would be so.

Also, in Appenzell they have multiple dates with one or more farmers arriving that day. I went about four different times last year and got some really wonderful photos. They often have children herding a few white goats as well - all so scenic against the rolling green hills! Definitely worth checking into when you are there, maybe you will catch one!

I am not ready. We never had summer in the UK or on my German trips. I want summer.

@Nigel - We are having summer weather here right now - quick, come on over! :)

@Phred - Exactly! My husband and I were just saying that we will have to research when these are happening so that we don’t accidentally happen upon one during our weekend motorbike rides. That would be a slippery adventure!

I was fortunate to witness a cow parade in Lauterbrunnen a few years ago, and it was one of the highlights of my trip. Some of the cows have very elaborate floral decorations, and of course large bells.

Thanks to your heads-up, Maureen, we witnessed three of the Alpabfahrt yesterday from our hotel room! We are staying at the Adler and our room looks right out on the bridge they go across. Yodelers, handlers, dozens of cows, and one little girl in traditional dress walking with her dad accompanying one of the herds.

Maureen, Oh my goodness! We leave September 5 and will spend a week in Wengen. Praying there’s a cow parade somewhere in the BO that week. Any suggestions as to how I find out? We’re staying in an Airbnb, so no “front desk” person to ask.

Hi @janejtay, I can't find any advertised at the moment, but that doesn't mean that there won't be one, sometimes the date is set very last minute.

In Wengen itself you can ask at the TI, they also have a notice board along the main street in town near the TI where they post events.

You can always keep checking this link for the Jungfrau region events, when they have the date(s) set they will post it online.

On Sat. Sept. 9th there is a bigger event in St. Stephan, which is near Lenk. Still in the BO, but 2.5h by train from Wengen, so maybe not what you are looking for. If you wanted to do a day trip to another area it is beautiful there as well. They will have the cows as well as a market, people playing the alphorn, yodeling, etc. You can watch the video that they share from a pervious year.

I was at the Alpine cow descent in Lauterbrunnen last September. A highlight of the trip! We hadn’t really planned it until someone told us how to look up the dates online, and it worked for us to be in Lauterbrunnen on that day! The cows wore huge jangling bells and flower crowns and some had flower wreaths around their middles. The herders were in traditional costume. It was an unforgettable experience. Later, as we took a bus to Trummelbach Falls, I saw some cows out in the pasture grazing with flower crowns still on their heads! I would love to see it in other villages too..
