Is Glacier Express worth it?

We're planning a trip to Switzerland in July.

We're still piecing together an itinerary; at the moment we're tentatively planning to visit Lucerne, Lauterbrunnen and Zermatt, where after a day or two, we would hop on the Glacier Express to St. Moritz. Obviously, Switzerland is a pricey country, but even so, the price of the trip seems extravagant.

Any opinions on whether the trip is worth it, considering what else we would/could see in the normal course of travel?

If we do opt for the Glacier Express trip, any other advice would be appreciated.

Consider looking into Swiss Pass train pass. Swiss Pass Flex lets you choose random days within a time period vs reg Swiss Pass is consecutive days once pass is activated on day one. Swiss Pass will get you discounted Glacier Express—you still make a reservation through Glacier Express website and they ask before you post payment if you have a certain pass from drop down menu which then drops the price. Must present your SwissPass as well as G Xp ticket at time of ride. It’s stunning and you will make a wonderful memory! Train travel throughout Switzerland is just the best! Download SBB mobile app, shows train schedule, easy hop on hop off. Trains always on time, clean, very pleasant and any train will afford you amazing countryside views! Zermatt is iconic. Visit mountaineers cemetery, very moving.

You can always take the non-premium, regular trains that travel the same route on the same tracks. No fancy name and no panoramic windows, but more options on departure times.

You will have to change trains 4 times with the regular trains between Zermatt and St Moritz. There are no on-board services except on the last leg to St Mortiz.

Whether it is worth it or not is up to you? Do you want to go to St Moritz, or other locations in the area, like Pontresina?

A scenic train ride is to take the RE1 from Spiez to Brig on the way from Lauterbrunnen to Zermatt. It will take about an hour or so longer than the standard route through the Loetschberg Base Tunnel. Specify via Kandersteg on the SBB route planner.

We did the Glacier Express in October in Excellence Class, so very, very pricey indeed, but so worth it.

The food was superb, as were the matched wines and it was one of our best train experiences ever, and we have had a few.

If you don't want to spend that much, just get reservations in first class and order food. We purchased a Saver Day Pass for the actual ticket, so it wasn't very expensive at all, for Switzerland.

It really is a once in a lifetime experience and I am so pleased that we did it.

I’ve never taken it and I’ve been to Switzerland multiple times.

Once you get near Lauterbrunnen and Zermatt, all your train and cable rides will be very scenic.

So, certainly don’t feel like you need to take it.

It entirely depends on what you enjoy. I have lived here in Switzerland for over 35 years and have been on it countless times. The scenery is great, but it's the same if you take the local trains or the express one. I don't think the dining on the express is great, so I prefer to take the local trains and stop off somewhere along the route to enjoy a meal at a local eating house.
