Interlaken Ost: 8min enough to store luggage and get on boat?

My 14yo daughter and I will be tourists in Switzerland in May 2025 (Shout out to other people going there at the same time! Maybe I'll see you there as well!).

One part of the journey is bugging me... we will be arriving Interlaken Ost Platform 5 via IC61 at 10:59am, and then taking a boat ride out on Lake Brienz at 11:07am. But in between we need o store our luggage at luggage lockers at Interlaken Ost. Is there enough time to do all that (leave the train, find where the luggage lockers are, use the luggage locker machine, stuff the luggage inside, run over to the boat dock, line up to get in the boat)? Or should I just plan on bringing our luggage onto the boat ride?

Thanks in advance!

Perhaps you can find some u-tube videos regarding the lockers. There are u-tube videos on just about every topic. This would be a great assignment for your daughter.

Or- when is the next boat? Perhaps it's not worth worrying about, if the next boat comes within a half hour or so?

Good luck , and enjoy this beautiful area!

I would take an earlier train so you’re not rushed.

If I remember correctly, boats are about every 2 hours in May so it’s a long wait if you miss. Trains are more frequent. So makes more sense to take an earlier train. Unless you have a super saver ticket, Swiss train tickets are not train/time specific. So it’s not an issue to take a different train.

I don't think 8 minutes is enough time to store luggage. Take it with, or take a later boat. There is one at 12:07 and you can relax, get a coffee and a snack at the Hotel du Lac next to the dock.

If it is May 10 or later, it looks like the next boat is 12:07 (better check). Your idea might be pretty optimistic, especially if you also have to buy tickets. You have to walk a ways and get to the other side of the tracks. If it looks like you might make it, you could find a locker, and if you then miss the boat, you just have to wander around Interlaken for 45 min. or so, find an ice cream or something. It is a beautiful lake, wonderful scenery. Maybe even get off in Brienz and have a great meal at the Steinbock. Take the next boat back.

I am seeing 11:07 boats from May 10 and onward. But if you are coming from Basel, where IC 61 originates, you can take a train 1/2 hour earlier but with a fast, cross platform transfer at Spiez. That will get you there at 10:26 and you will have plenty of time to store your bags.

Thanks for all the replies so far! The reason I'd like to take the 11:07am boat is because it's the Lötschberg steamboat as opposed to the 12:07 which is not.

So yeah I think I'll take the suggestion of arriving at Interlaken Ost a bit earlier. I'll just have to make sure my daughter can get up early with me (she's not a morning person but hopefully she'll make an exception for the trip).

when you are on the DS Lötschberg, a lovely boat - I've been on her several times - once you are under way wander into the middle of the boat where you can look down at the compound engine, a good machine.

I hope the two of you have a great time. Maybe ride the ancient funicular at the Giessbach.

Yes, the Lötschberg begins sailing on May 10 at 11:07. Since this is special, I would definitely arrive earlier to get the bags stored.

There are 105 lockers at Interlaken Ost, all the same size, about 17 1/2" by 24" by 34 1/2". Cost is 10 CHF each for 24 hours. They take credit cards.

Yes, as shared above, 8 minutes is definitely not enough time. If you weren't storing your luggage, you could definitely do it though. You don't say where you're ending up or if you're getting off the boat at any stops. If this is just a scenic boat ride to enjoy the views from the water and you're not getting off at stops, you can take your luggage with you on the boat and just keep it with you until Brienz and then take the train from Brienz to wherever your final destination is. There isn't really a need to do the boat ride roundtrip back to Interlaken, unless I'm missing a piece of what your plan is.
