I have taken a ride on Flixbus (Munich to Salzburg in 2 hours) it seems very safe;
but I do not think I will ever again sit on a bus for 7 hours while on vacation(been there done that before). The one thing you have to pay attention to is just your belongings when the bus stops. I would probably take the train with all the changes or train to Basel and Fly direct. I don't like long train rides because you have to watch your belonging with all the stops.

Preferred method is train, though flying could be a little bit faster, at the cost of a lot more stress.

  • Train involves a different route south from Interlaken or Luzern. but in both cases you get to go through the Alps, then change at Milan for Venice.
  • This would be the best option for kids, they have room to move, spread out, eat and drink (and go to the toilet) with no restrictions.
  • Fly would involve a train to Zürich airport (70 mins from Luzern, 2 hours from Interlaken), check in, airport hassle etc., and getting from the airport into Venice.
  • Train is (nearly) door to door. Changing trains is not any problem.
  • No way would I consider a bus all that way, especially overnight and doubly not with kids.

Lots of info about the trains here, including photos and a video: https://www.seat61.com/trains-and-routes/etr610.htm
When you reserve, try and get 4 seats round a table, then you have a private family space.

You are going to have to travel by train to Luzern anyway to get the Flixbus to Venice. From Luzern, you can get to Venice with a single change in Milan in 6 1/2 hours. Train will be way more comfortable than sitting in a bus seat for 7+ hours overnight. I am not nearly as paranoid about luggage as the previous poster. Each of the 2 legs has 6 stops each, for just 2 to 4 minutes. And you have 5 sets of eyes.

I wouldn't be particularly paranoid about luggage on a train either. If anything I'd actually be more concerned on a bus where unloading happens out of sight...

As for connections from Interlaken to Venice I've found that there are three train connections with only two changes. The earliest (8:00 departure) has the changes in Switzerland (15' in Spiez and 30' in Brig). This should be more than ample even with kids.

The reclining seat on an overnight bus, even a nice new one like this, is no better than trying to sleep in an airplane seat.

We took the following route from Murren to Venice last year and loved it: Drive (or train) to Chur. Bernina Express to Tirano, Italy. Trenord regional train along Lake Como to Milan. Frecciargento fast train to Venice. Its a full day, leaving Chur at 8:30 am and getting into Venice about 8:00 pm, but the scenery of the Alps and Lake Como was worth it.

Look into flights from Zurich. Spend money to save time when on vacation!
