Interlaken hotel to Murren

Hello all, first trip to Switzerland September 1st. I was hoping to get some insight on how much time it will take us to get from our hotel in Interlaken to Murren? We will be doing the Via Ferrata in Murren.
thx

According to the SBB website schedules, it takes 53 minutes from the time your train departs Interlaken Öst station to reach the Mürren train station, with 2 transfers on the way. Allow about 15 minutes more to walk to the sport shop where you pay and then meet the via Ferrata guides. At least I assume you are going with a guide? My husband did this last time we were in Mürren and loved it.

most would recommend staying in Murren, not Interlaken

I don’t recommend staying in Interlaken either. It is a transit hub. Stay in Murren or Grindelwald.

sharpy,

I would also recommend actually staying in the valley rather than Interlaken, as it will not only be nicer to be in middle of the scenery, but also quicker to get between sites. However if you've already booked a hotel in Interlaken, I guess you're stuck with that.

The route from Interlaken to Mürren is quite straightforward.....

  • travel from your hotel to Interlaken Ost station (you may be able to walk)
  • Buy return tickets to Mürren. They will include all modes of transport. You will have to specify which route you wish to take to Mürren. I would recommend the "BLM" route.
  • Take the train from Interlaken Ost to Lauterbrunnen (about 20 minutes as I recall). Be sure to check the small digital display on the side of the coach to ensure that car is going to Lauterbrunnen.
  • When you arrive in Lauterbrunnen, walk across the street to the cable car station, climb the stairs and take the next cable car to Grütschalp (about 10 minutes?).
  • When you arrive in Grütschalp transfer from the cable car to the small mountain railway, which will probably be waiting. That will take you right to Mürren (another 10-15 minutes?).

I believe the start of the Via Ferrata is located in about the centre of town, so you'll have a short walk from the BLM rail station. The RS Switzerland guidebook will have all the details.
