Interlachen to Venice by rail

Hi Travelers,
Im researching a June European trip with my 16 year old the summer before she starts her gap year on her own. Want to show her the ropes and get her comfortable staying in hostels and using the train. I want to go from interlachen to venice but the sbb website is confusing. Anyone have any ideas?

It will be important to spell correctly (Interlaken), there are 2, Interlaken West and Interlaken Ost, which is the one that you come down the mountain to. Venice is Venezia Santa Lucia. Milan, where you will change onto the high speed train is Milano Centrale.

Greeley - HI, do you want the fastest but a little bit less scenic route or the slower but fabulously scenic route? There are 2 basic routes.

You can purchase those super saver cheap tickets right now for summer Italian train travels. Book from Brig to Venezia San Lucia via Milano Centrale on www.trenitalia.com for your Italian portion. Book from Murren BLM to Brig on the www.sbb.ch Swiss site.

Thanks for the spelling lessons and the advice. I am thinking the slower more fabulously scenic route should be my first choice, how do I book it, Nigel?

What Tim said, but "via Luzern" and Brunig.

What I wrote about the Brunig Pass part of the journey almost a year ago was:

Its very good advice not to wait for the fancy train between Luzern and Interlaken Ost. A couple of things to know about that route :- The normal train will be painted Zentralbahn, because it sort of goes through the centre of Switzerland. The trains are relatively simple but the windows open and the train goes slowly through the gorgeous countryside. There will be very steep bits so the engine has special pinion gears which connect with a rack between the running rails which are narrow gauge. You will hear the bang as it connects and whizz as it releases. It is only used on the steepest up and down bits. You will pass through beautiful villages, past lovely blue and green lakes, through woods while climbing, look across the valley to see waterfalls streaming down the cliffs. After you come down the cliff and run along the river you will get to Meiringen, which is famous for at least 2 things - the invention of meringue and the Reichenbach Falls where Sherlock Holmes killed Moriarty. You can walk to the funicular which goes up to the top of the Falls and walk down, or even walk up and down. They are the actual Falls mentioned in the book. After you leave Meiringen you head towards Brienz at the head of the Brienzersee where you can see the landing stage of the ships from Interlaken Ost on the absolutely gobsmacking green lake. You can see over to the waterfall right at lake level which comes right down the cliff and is visible across the lake. Brienz is famous for its wood carvers and steam incline railway. You finally arrive at Interlaken Ost where your adventure of the Berner Oberland begins. You will have seen these mountains for an hour or two and now you can touch them. The route I have described is "via Brunig Pass".

The Luzern route is indeed beautiful, but the train ride from Venezia SL -> Milano Centrale -> Interlaken is already long enough. If you would rather sit on a train longer then go the "extra scenic" route. However, you will be arrive into one of the most beautiful areas of all Switzerland so there will be plenty of scenery AND you'll be free to get out in the middle of it and enjoy it rather than sitting on a train looking out the window.

Also - for the spectacular scenery just use Interlaken Ost to change trains and keep on going up into the mountains via Lauterbrunnen then onto either Murren or Wengen. That's where you'll get the spectacular scenery...not Interlaken.
