The Swiss call it their “National Day”. It commemorates the forming of a Federation among 3 cantons. They were already independent.

We were in Appenzel on 8/1. The church bells rang for 5 minutes at 5:30 pm, there were lots of fireworks in driveways when it got dark and then an aerial display at 10 pm. Pretty similar to our 4th of July.
