Ideas for Lucerne

Hi,

My wife and I will spending 3 days in Lucerne in November and looking for ideas of things to do in the area. I have read somewhere that it is a good trip to catch the cable car up to the top of a nearby mountain and a boat trip on the lake is a great trip as well.

Thanks in advance on any suggestions/ideas.

Isn't the Victorinox (Swiss Army Knife) manufacturing plant somewhere around there? Personally, I'd love an opportunity to visit the plant and see some history of the area. We'll be in the area in a couple of weeks, and I'm attempting to see about plant tours. Looking forward to other responses.

Like you mentioned, the lake and the mountain are great things to do. Take a boat across to Weggis or Vitznau, and take the cable car up to Rigi Kaltbad, explore and then head up the rest of the way, or if you want to go all the way up right away, take the tram from Vitznau to Rigi Kulm. I would recommend timing it so you will be up there for sunset. It was one of the most beautiful sights I've seen. It may be a little cold but there are some restaurants and lodges where you can stop in and get some soup or a drink while you warm up.

Russell,

You may want to check your local Library to see if you can find a copy of the Switzerland guidebook, as there are lots of good suggestions there. Lucerne is a wonderful city, and you shouldn't have any problems finding things to do for three days. For example.....

  • Day trip to Mt. Pilatus, which I believe is what you were referring to.
  • Cruises on the lake.
  • Visit the excellent Museum of Transport, which has displays on just about every form of transportation. It's incredible and one could easily spend the better part of a day there (I did).
  • Visit the park to see the statue of the famous Lion of Lucerne which Mark Twain described as "the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world."
  • Have a fine hot meal in one of the restaurants overlooking the famous Chapel Bridge (the view is especially nice at night).
  • Take one of the walking tours offered at the T.I. (their office is in the rail station as I recall - some tours are offered in both German and English).
  • Browse the posh stores such as the Bucherer Jewellry stores. Who knows, you may decide to buy a $10K Rolex Watch or some other bling while you're there.

Happy travels!

Thank you all for the quick responses, especially you Ken. You responded to a question I raised a couple of months ago and I appreciate you, and everybody else, taking the time to respond.

Those ideas are great and should keep us occupied for our three days.

Thanks again......

Walk the old town, check into a walking tour of the city at the TI attached to the train station, walk the walls and explore the towers.
Lucerne is a fascinating city. I agree with all that Ken suggested as my husband and I enjoyed 5 days in Lucerne last May.

My father and I visited Lucerne @ this time last year. Above all the things I have lasting memories of are Mt. Pilatus and walking the old town walls/towers. Enjoy the trip!
