Ideas for a very last minute itinerary change

We arrived in Zurich today.. Lucerne tomorrow for 2 nights, then Murren for 4 nights. After that, Varenna, Florence, Milan... So, the forecast for Murren is not so good. Rain/snow in the 30 and 40s. Not ideal for casual hikers. I know the weather changes, but it's not going to be in the 60 and clear all 4 days, no matter what. Non refundable room. We are thinking about possibly canceling the last 2 nights (eating the cost for 2 nights) and heading south early. Any creative suggestions that do not include Varenna, Florence, Milan. And also won't require alot of backtracking. One thought was lugano...

I usually go for 4 or 5 nights and I've never known it clear every day. That's why I go for longer periods.

There's lots to do even if the weather is soft for a while. The walk from Mürren to Grütchalp is beautiful when there is low cloud or fog, looking over the valley to Wengen poking out of the clouds from time to time.

It is often helpful to use a local weather app. Meteoblue shows Lauterbrunnen for tomorrow to have only 5 to 10 mm of rain, a high of high of 14C (57F) and a low of 9C (48F). Saturday half the rain, 2 to 5 mm, and a high of 15C (59F) and the same low. Sunday has more rain - 10 to 20mm which is quite a lot, and a high of 12C (53.5F) and a low of 7C (44.5F). Not perfect by any way, but not as bad as you said. As you ascend it will get colder - it always does.

Sorry the weather gods are not cooperating.

I think you can still have a great time in the Swiss Alps despite the rain. I’m in the process of planning a trip for April and have the following suggestions if you prefer not to walk in the rain:

--Trummelbach Falls

--Staubbach Falls

--Train to Bern and/or Fribourg or Murten

--Boat cruise on Lake Thun or Lake Brienz. If the boats don’t operate in the rain, how about a train to Thun or Spiez. There are 5 castles around Lake Thun if that interests you. At this time of year, I believe you can go inside all of them.

--St Beatus Caves

--Walk around the mountain towns. You can always duck inside a shop or restaurant to get out of the rain.

Enjoy the rest of your trip!!

Lugano is beautiful and Mt San Salvatore is pleasant for a casual hike. Take the funicular up if you prefer.

We are in Lucern right now (just as charming as can be). Planning to go to Mt Rigi today. The adventure starts tomorrow, Sunday. Meteoswiss is calling for temp around 40 with steady rain, but weather channel day snow. Monday may clear for trip to Schiltonhorn. Still waiting to make a decision for Tue and Wed. Hoping for the best!! Just a note, we can deal with most weather, but a constant cold rain in no fun. Thanks for all of the input. Will keep posting.

South of Lucerne, a bit more than halfway to Murren is Ballenberg - the "open-air museum in Switzerland that displays traditional buildings and architecture from all over the country. ... Ballenberg has over 100 original buildings that have been transported from their original sites."

We went there as a day trip by public transportation from Lucerne and thoroughly enjoyed wandering around the "villages" of buildings from different eras. It's outdoors and expecting rain through the weekend, sunny on Monday, and could be a pleasant alternative.

Thanks for all off the feedback. Here is the latest. Rolled into Murren Sunday afternoon. Rain and chill. Heavy rain overnight. This morning there is some sun, we are going to Schiltorn. Forecast is for better conditions Tuesday and Wednesday, so we may go up a 2nd or 3rd time. Just like many on this forum say, you can't trust a long range forecast in the Alps.

Glad you went ahead with your plans! We had a similar experience in May. Hope you can fit in some walks/hikes.
