Ideas - Day trip/overnight trips from Rapperswil

Hi all,

I'll be staying in Rapperswil for 12 days in June of 2025. My wife and I are planning on taking a couple day trips via train but also two seperate 1-2 night trips. We were thinking an overnight in Grindelwald/Lauterbrunnen area and the other in Appenzell. We love to hike and see beauty. I know this is the high season, but hope to avoid crowds as much as possible. I was hoping for advice on where to stay and what to do.

Thank you so much!

Is there a reason you're staying in Rapperswil the whole 12 days and doing overnight trips from there vs just moving? Would make more sense to use the various bases instead of returning back to Rapperswil each time. Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen can justify more than a day, as can Appenzell if you plan to hike. If you commute and only stay over 1 night it will severely limit the hikes you can do. If you have 12 days, you could do some in Rapperswil, then move to the Jungfrau Region for 3-6 nights, then move to Appenzell for a few nights before flying out of Zurich, I'm assuming. Just a thought. Alternatively, if you really want to stay away from crowds, pick areas that aren't as high on the tourist radar. Places like Bettmeralp, Saas Fee, etc. are very beautiful with great hiking and way less people.

I have a free place to stay in Rapperswil. If budget wasn’t an issue, I agree with you, I’d move from place to place.

That makes sense. If you want to hike, I'd recommend 1-2 nights in Murren, Wengen or Grindelwald and 1-2 nights somewhere near Appenzell, depending on the types of hikes you want to do. If you share your hiking level ability, I'm happy to suggest some.

Its only 1 1/2 hours from Rapperswil to Appenzell, so you could do that as a day trip, and spend longer in the Bernese Oberland.
