Hut & High Alpine Backpacking Routes from Gimmelwald

Hello,

I was looking for some suggestions on good 1 night high alpine backpacking trek or a alpine hut to reach from Gimmelwald after staying a night in the youth hostel there. I love this place as I visited last summer an hiked to the Faulhorn hut from nearby Grindelwald. I'm experienced (no mountaineering gear for climbing though) an will be with two other experienced hikers, looking for great views, wilderness, and a challenge.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

A classic hike would be the Alpine Pass route between Mürren and Kandersteg. The Alpine Pass is a high route through the Swiss Alps, and this sections crosses the two highest passes. It is not actually “wilderness” as this is hard to find in large expanses in Switzerland, but it would definitely be challenging.

Day 1 would be Mürren to Griesalp by way of the Sefinenfurke. Griesalp (which is not wilderness; it is accessible by road up the Kiental) offers several options for simple accommodations in mountain inns such as Pension Golderli.

Day 2 takes you over Hohtürli, the highest pass on the route. There is an SAC hut up there, the Blumlisalphuette, where you can stop for lunch. Then drop down to Oeschinensee and on to Kandersteg to catch the train.

Here is one person’s account of the hike, done at a time when there was still a lot of lingering snow.

Lola, my wife and I have been back and forth several times in the Kandertal this week and I was telling her how beautiful and great walking you find it.

It is a seriously beautiful place. Yum.

We will be back there the end of this month! This time with grandchildren ( and their parents).
