I'm traveling to the Berner Oberland/Murren area the first week of October. And then off towards Vienna through mid-October. How warm of a coat is suggested? Would a long Patagonia coat be too much?
It is best to look up the weather history of each place you are traveling to and decide based on your own tolerance what kind of outer wear you need to bring to be comfortable.

For example I have a friend on blood thinners that tends to feel cold when others do not. I have a nephew that feels warm when I feel cold in certain weather.
Thank you so much for the link! It is very helpful! I appreciate your sharing!
I use the layering approach. Base layer, warmth layer, waterproof raincoat. I can adjust the layers to changing weather conditions.
In the same way, I am NEVER cold, so a light jacket suffices for me unless its actively snowing on top of a mountain!
Dont just look at the daily highs/lows at each location. Consider that the temperature can drop a lot quickly in the mountains. So you have to be prepared to layer up or down if you're out all day.
These days you need to expect anything, I was in Vienna & Salzburg in early October and man was it hot, almost had to go shopping for some lighter shirts
