How to book remote mountains hotels, huts, berghotels?

I'm visiting Switzerland in June and I will have 3 days free between arriving in Geneva and a conference in Lausanne. I thought it would be nice to go to the mountains and find some place to hike, read, eat cheese, and drink beer.

I heard tell of remote guesthouses which are not accessible by car. This page lists a few of these "berghotels" which seem amazing, but I'm not sure how to book them.

Anyone know how I might book a place like this from the USA? This page lists some phone numbers for a few of these places. Do I make an international call during Swiss business hours and hope that they speak English?

You can find information on Obersteinberg and the webpage for Tschingelhorn on the Stechelberg tourism page:

Faulhorn, like many other mountain inns, has a website too:

We have had lunch here but not stayed overnight. The mountaintop location is spectacular.

As you can see, many can be found by the name of the inn followed by “.ch”

If you decide on Obersteinberg (the more rustic of the two you mention) you do need to call, during a good time in Switzerland. You should have no trouble speaking English; I believe that is the one run by an American woman and her Swiss husband.

Here is another, one where we have stayed several times, by a beautiful lake. It is not as remote; you reach it by gondola from Kandersteg and a short 20-minute walk. Or you can hike up.

Be prepared to pay cash at the mountain huts. Some of them we have experienced don't take CC.
