How to best spend time in and around Murren

I will have 3 nights - 2 full days - in Murren. We know we will go to Schilthorn on one of those days. And of course I’d like to get into Jungfrau, but that seems like a very involved day with a lot of travel coming from Murren. Is it worth it to spend the travel time going to Jungfrau?

How would you advise that we spend one evening and 2 full days in Murren? One of us is a thrill seeker, one is a mostly easy teenager who is only fine with small hikes, but nothing extensive. And one of us wants to use her brand new camera to capture it all, so will pretty much go anywhere.

What will maximize our time there?

Plenty of hiking trails, from easy to difficult. On a rainy day, go to the valley floor and visit Trummelbach Falls. Visit the cheese place on the walk to Grütschalp. Picnic at a place with a view. Talk to the locals about life there. Its a place to relax and enjoy the scenery, not so much on canned activities or indoor sights.

Having taken each of my teens to that region on different occasions I can say that the trails and cows and fantastic mountain views are fun for all ages.

I'll send you a private mail of our favorite trails around there, just click on your name in upper right to read your mail.

Just stepping out of your hotel's front door you'll be mesmerized. You'll want to explore the village as well as take the long walk down to Gimmelwald and look around. Jump on the Gimmelwald gondola and continue down to Stechelberg where you can either catch the Post Bus to Trummelbache Falls or just take the nice leisurely walking down the deserted road to it. There's a very nice cafe with lots of outdoor seating with views all around like you won't believe. When you're finished either jump on the Post Bus from there on to Lauterbrunnen or bypass the Post Bus, cross the street and take the gravel path all the way to Staubbach Falls and on to Lauterbrunnen. Hop on the gondola from there back to Grutschalp and then on to Murren. This trek can take the better part of a day especially if you stop in Lauterbrunnen long enough for lunch or dinner.

The Jungfrau is nice, but it's horribly crowded and rather expensive. Even if you don't go all the way to Jungfrau you should still jump on the train and visit Wengen and even Kleine Scheidegg.

There's so much to do and see here - but don't make a schedule, just go wherever and whenever you want.

Hi Finn, stop at the Birg station on your way to or from the Schilthorn. They have a Thrill Walk that you might enjoy. Lots of fun. Love Murren.

It is easy to get from Murren to Jungfrau. If going to a mountain top, go early in the morning. The clouds can come in fast. We took a 730 gondola up to Schilthorn. We had about an hour at the top before the clouds rolled in. Check the weather with live weather camera's at the top of each before leaving. I would head up the first clear day. Great hikes in the area.

In addition to the wonderful walks/hikes, we rented bikes in Murren which was very fun and my teen son went paragliding. He loved it.
