Hello! I'm looking for opinions from people who have spent time in BOTH Valais (SW Switzerland: Zermatt, Chamonix/France, Lausanne, Monteux, Diablerets) and Berner Oberland. Would you spend more time in BO vs. Valais (SW Switzerland) or the other way around? From everything I read, people would spend more time in BO than SW Switzerland. Our timeframe is September. We mostly enjoy easy walks, scenery, charm, small towns, history. We will have a car and will have a single base in each area. Thank you! ~Kay
The B.O. is my favorite area but the west has more of the cute small towns you like.
Let me add that I really enjoyed staying in Vevey vs. Montreux on my last trip in 2017. It's a quiet bedroom community next to Montreux and it has a bus line that will take you right into town. My particular B&B, 7e Art, provided me with a Riviera Pass which gaves me free run of all the local buses and trains, and some museums.
You should find more variety in the Valais region---larger cities, small towns, ski resorts, castles, lakes, vineyards.
I'd want to spend longer in the place with the better weather at the time.
@FastEddie, thanks for the tip on the quiet community of Vevey and the B&B name. @Lola, thank you for noting the "variety" in the Valais/Vaud/Fribourg cantons (I'm learning the properly named cantons instead of saying SW Switzerland). @Nigel...yes, wouldn't it be wonderful is we had a crystal ball on the weather? Unfortunately, I have to play a guessing game as I want to make sure I reserve a place to stay. That's the way we roll. Advance reservations that fit our budget R us.
