How is Switzeland's Temperature in May for someone from the Philippines?

Hello! We are planning to take a trip in Switzeland, Germany and Prague in May 2017. I'm a bit worried about the temperature in those countries since i grew up in a very tropical country which is the Philippines. This is my first time abroad so could you please help me on what kinds of clothing do i have to bring. Thank you.

Switzerland while a small country has a variety of altitudes and the weather north of the Alps is quite different to the weather south of the Alps in Ticino (the Canton where Italian is spoken).

Also, the weather in early May is often quite different to late May in Switzerland.

Germany is a very large country, and different parts of the country will have quite different weather.

Can you elaborate a bit more on where in Germany, where in Switzerland and a bit more clarity on when in May?

Think about layers instead of one heavy coat, so you can adjust for each day and location. When I go to Switzerland, I pack tights to wear under my pants. For my top half, I pack a microweave thin thermal top, a long sleeve T, a cardigan, and a rain coat that's also good to keep out wind. I have coworkers from the Philippines and she also likes the fleece lightweight coats for layering.

For advance planning go to wunderground.com. Key in a city name and select [Enter] on your keyboard. Click on "History" below the city name. Click on "Custom" above the data chart. Enter the starting and ending dates for your planned stay in that city but use 2016 (not 2017) as the year. You will see actual data, which I find far more useful than averages. Repeat this for as many years as you have patience for; one year doesn't really tell you anything.

Now repeat for your other destinations. Watch for situations in which the website changes the city/town you entered to a different place. You may have entered a mountain destination for which daily weather data isn't available, so it changes to a nearby reporting site, likely at a lower altitude where it is warmer. As you ascend, the temperature drops an average of 9.8C degrees per 1000 meters or 5.4F degrees per 1000 feet on a clear day. The effect is less if you are in a cloud or there is rain/snow: 6C degrees or 3.3F degrees. (This website is my source for the effect of altitude). So for mountain destinations you may need to make that adjustment.

A day or two before you begin your trip you can get current real-world data for your first destination or two. As we all know, those predictions are not terribly reliable, but they are a start. It often seems that the temperature estimates are more accurate than the rain/snow projections.

It can be cool and cloudy/rainy north of the Alps at just about any time of the year. I last visited Switzerland decades ago, but during late May (or perhaps early June) I had plenty of days when the temperature did not get above 55F (13C), and I wasn't up in the mountains. A major issue was that when the clouds (and accompanying colder weather) moved in, they seemed to stay for several days.

Thank you so much for all your informative replies! They are very helpful.

We are going to visit Geneva, Luzern, Gindelwald, Tramelyn, Stuttgart, Worms, Rhine Cruise, Visit castles in Germany, Erfurt, Wittenberg, Prague. Will these places be cold for someone like me from the Philippines?

Thank you. :)
