How does free upgrade work on SBB tickets?

Hello,

We got a point-to-point ticket that has free upgrade. When I purchased the ticket, I thought it said one leg of the trip can be upgraded. But when I look at the ticket now, it just says class upgrade.

So here are my questions.
1) Do we have upgrade for all or just one leg of our choosing?

2) How do we upgrade? Do we just board the first class cabin and wait for the conductor?

Thank you!

It sounds to me like you have the upgrade purchased but not the actual ticket.

I have never heard of a free upgrade. I know you can purchase an upgrade to first class.

Perhaps someone else has heard of this and can help.

You definitely want to make sure you have the correct ticket BEFORE you board the train. You won’t always see a conductor and can be fined for sitting in 1st class with a 2nd class ticket.

I do have the tickets. Have the ticket ID, QR code ,,etc in SBB app.

Hope someone can help. Thank you for your response!

I do not know of any free upgrades. Upgrade to 1st class always costs extra.

It would maybe help us if you told us what you actually bought. Ie. what does it say on the ticket? For what route is this?

I think you must be confused about what you have. Sharing more specifics about what specific route/time/price you paid will be helpful in clearing this up.

But when I look at the ticket now, it just says class upgrade.

If it says class upgrade, then that is what you have purchased. You would still have a QR code, etc in the app for this as that is what you would show the conductor, along with whatever kind of second class ticket you have (Saver day pass, STP, etc.).

Sharing your exact route here will be helpful, but one way for you to check for yourself what it is you actually purchased would be to compare the prices. A class upgrade is significantly cheaper than the cost of a ticket for the same route. Look up the route again in SBB and see what a ticket costs. For example:

Zürich Flughafen - Lauterbrunnen (with Half fare card) = CHF 42.40
Point-to-point class upgrade = 29.80

It's from Lucerne to Murren. Paid 29CHF. I thought it was a special deal for buying early in advanced. But maybe this is just for the class upgrade. 😞

All you bought was the upgrade. A ticket from Luzern to Mürren costs 87.80chf full fare or 43.90chf half fare. The only other discount you can get is a Saver Day Pass (price varies depending on how far out you purchase) or a saver offer for an exact train time (can’t miss that specific train).

Right now you have no ticket for travel. If you purchase the full fare 2nd class ticket for 87.80 then you’ll be able to sit in 1st class with your purchased upgrade.

If you saw on the app or site “tickets from 28chf” that’s because the upgrade starts at that price, not the actual ticket. Your ticket must say “point to point”.

I have purchased the wrong ticket before, it happens! If you don’t want the upgrade you can request a refund. I have done it right within the SBB app. :-)

Glad I asked here. I would have had wrong tickets! It said "Additional Offers", so I took it as "Deals". I didn't take it as add-ons. Lol.

Another question came up, while trying to rebook. I am looking at Murren to Vallorcine. If I search first by the route/date, it doesn't give Saver Day Pass options. But if I just go to Saver Day Pass page and look for the date, it has it available. For the other route (Lucerne to Murren), I see the Saver Day Pass option from route/date search result. Any idea? I thought I purchased Saver Day Pass from route/date search option for Murren to Vallorcine, but I no longer see this. And what I paid 88CHF, vs 70CHF now from Saver Day Pass page.

Edit: When i purchased Day Pass, I asked SBB if Vallorcine is included and they said yes.

You can just buy the Saver Day Pass on this page, you do not need to buy it by entering the route you will use it on. Just get one for your date of travel and you are good to go.

That is just a quirk in the SBB trip planner. This question came up previously, and the OP confirmed directly from SBB that the Saver Day Pass was valid all the way to Vallorcine.

Blockquote

I chatted with SBB agent again today and initially they said it was not covered. I asked if this was a recent change and shared a screenshot of the chat from before where the agent said yes. Then today's agent did a little more research and said it is covered. :-)

The issue with the Martigny - Chamonix route is that the border is at Chatelard, but the transfer point between French and Swiss trains is in Vallorcine. And they are only a stone's throw away from each other. These few km are a bit weird. Anything that is valid in the "GA" area is valid till Vallorcine, so you can use a saver day pass.
But the Swiss Travel Pass is not valid, it only gives you a reduction....

Not really logical and they should fix that.

If you have questions on what is valid where: This is the place to go:

Always look at the fine print. There is actually a mention that the class upgrade is only valid in combination with a 2nd class ticket.
