Please let us know what hotels or other accomodations you have stayed in one of these three towns. My wife and I are in late 60's, first trip to Switzerland. Will do some light walking/hiking, but looking for beautiful views from room, prefer a NON shared bathroom. All recommendations are really appreciated. thanks.
We did RS’s best of europe trip in 2016 and stayed at Hotel Bellevue in Wengen. It has a great breakfast in a sort of “old world” expansive ground floor dining and sitting area. Some rooms we heard had great views of the mountains, though our rooms did not have those views. We loved the location near pastures with cows and cowbells ringing, and walking trails.
Gimmelwald is pretty limited. Only a couple of B&B and hostel type spots
Hotel Alpenblick, Hotel Jungfrau & Hotel Edelweiss in Murren all have rooms with great views.
I also stayed at the hotel Bellevue in Wengen and our view was stunning. We had a corner room overlooking the entire valley and I’m bringing my entire family back in 2026 just to see that view.
I’m sure other hotels have great views as well but I can personally attest to the amazing views at Bellevue.
Have a great trip!
I'd stay away from the Hotel Jungfrau in Murren for multiple reasons.
Murren: Hotel Eiger, Murren Palace, Alpenblick, Alpina, Edelweiss, Eiger Guesthouse
--east or southeast facing balcony for best views
Gimmelwald: Pension Gimmelwald, Esther's Guesthouse, Olle & Maria's Bed & Breakfast
--east or southeast facing balcony for best views
Wengen: Hotel Baren, Beausite Park Hotel & Spa, Silberhorn
---south facing balcony for best views
Wengen is the best option for convenience to day trips. Gimmelwald is the quietest, but doesn't have grocery/hotels/shops.
We stayed in a room with stunning views at the Maya Caprice in Wengen.
Huge room which was sort of wasted because we couldn't leave the beautiful balcony views.
The hotel also had an excellent chef, in a week we ate there twice and it was by far the best food in our almost four weeks in Switzerland and Lake Como.
Our stay at Edelweiss Hotel in Wengen was terrific! Our private room had a balcony with a view of the Jungfrau. The hotel was immaculately clean, owners provided stellar service and suggestions. Breakfast had varied choices, and they offer a four course dinner every evening for 35 CHF. That's a bargain in Switzerland, and the food was delicious. For light hiking/walking, I would suggest you consider the paved path from Murren to Gimmelwald. Beautiful and enjoyable!
Hotel Edelweiss in Murren, but only if you pay extra for a room with a view.
santoro,
You might also consider staying in Lauterbrunnen, as it's the transportation hub for that area and central to both sides of the valley. There are some good hotels there and easy access to the lifts and trains. Here's an overview - https://www.myswitzerland.com/en-ca/accommodations/hotel-search/-/lauterbrunnen/ . I stayed at Hotel Oberland on my last visit and quite enjoyed my time there.
A few thoughts on each of the places you mentioned....
- Gimmelwald - a smaller community but there are some accommodations, including the Pension Gimmelwald, the Mountain Hostel and Esther's Guesthouse. This provides more information on accommodations - https://gimmelwald.ch/?page_id=1101&lang=en . It's somewhat quiet there in the evenings.
- Mürren - This is the next town up the hill from Gimmelwald, and is somewhat larger so it has more services and accommodations. This provides an overview of accommodations - https://www.myswitzerland.com/en-ca/accommodations/hotel-search/-/muerren/ .
- Wengen - is located on the opposite side of the valley from Mürren. I'm not as familiar with the hotels there, so can't offer any recommendations.
The Rick Steves Switzerland guidebook also has listings for good, reliable accommodations in all the communities there. Where to stay will depend to some extent on what sightseeing you want to do in that area.
Just spent 6 nights at the Hotel Eidelweiss Murren in one of the "newer" cliffside rooms. Cannot recommend too strongly, had a wonderful stay. Restaurant was consistently very good both breakfast and dinner. A short walk (200 meters?) from the Murren BLM station. Also stayed at drei Berge back in august, the outdoor terrace has awesome panoramic views of the mountains, restaurant was good, but rooms are nicer at the Eidelweiss. Strongly recommend Hotel Eidelweiss Murren.
I would discourage Gimmewald, good for a short walk but very little going on there. Lauterbrunnen is down in the valley with the main rail station. Beautiful view of the valley, but the 5* views are from Murren IMO.
Great easy walks available in Murren (we are in early 70's), also the valley walk from Stechelberg to Lauterbrunnen is non challenging and 5* beautiful.
Only skiied through Wengen to the train station, but my impression was that Murren has better views and less congestion.
I loved Pension Gimmelwald. Very simple, comfortable, friendly hosts and delicious food. I got the half board, since I was alone and didn't want to be out looking for restaurants each night. The meals were excellent.
It is very close to the lift, and the hostel is right out back if you want to get pizza for a change.
I agree with TravelBug re the stay and half board at the Edelweiss Hotel in Wengen.
