Hotels in Pontresina ? July Pre-RS 12 Day Tour

Thanks for all the suggestions. We did purchase the 4/5 day Swiss Rail Pass. We estimate $300+ savings over planned travel. Trains/Boats/Lifts/etc.
We are arriving Zurich Airport Tuesday @ 11:00 AM, then the Train to Pontresina. Stay over, then the Bernina to Tirano and back to Pontresina same day, stay over one more night, then the next day to Luzern.
We would appreciate any hotel suggestions, boutique, quiet, in town. We looked at the Chesa Mulin?
Any same day train excursions out of Luzern we should be looking at?
Safe Travels!

In your previous post, I had added my Trip Report, with our Lucerne adventures. ( I know it's a lot to read.😉) We also stayed at the Chesa Mulin, which I reviewed in my Trip Report. I believe RS tours stay there.
Good luck on planning your trip to this beautiful country!

Last year we stayed in Pontresina at the Chesa Mulin, after reading Pat's Trip Report. The hotel is conveniently located near the "Stop on Demand" Surovas station. I don't know your ages, but I think the Chesa Mulin has a "senior discount."
...and if you are on a regional train, heading back to Pontresina from Tirano, you might consider getting off at Alp Grüm and having lunch on the terrace at the hotel/restaurant adjacent to the train station and taking a later train back to Pontresina. That's what we did last year.

Carol, next time I'm there, I'll take your lunch suggestion.
We really enjoyed the access to the two lifts and to the outdoor heated pool that Hotel Chesa Mulin provided. Safe travels!

Chesa Mulin was to be my choice had we stayed in Pontresina. It looks like a very nice place. We ended up staying in Samedan instead to save a few francs.

Note that the hotels in this area offer a card for free transport on trains and lifts in the area with a 2-night stay. I know you will have a Swiss pass for the trains, but the local transport pass might come in handy.

Thank you so much Pat & Carol, we are booked 2 nights at the Mulin and also booked our (bucket list) Bernina ride from Pontresina round trip to Tirano. So looking forward to this excursion before our RS 12 day tour. Any restaurant suggestions for Pontresina?

Romantik Hotel Muottas Muragl is sublime

It really is, I have fond memories of a Jan 2020 stay there, but I'd be surprised if it still had availability in July - although you never know!

Worth a look, bearing in mind that the location up at the top of the mountain is a drawback for some people - you are basically "locked in" at night, and have to take the funicular to the valley for any sightseeing beyond Muottas Muragl.

In Pontressina, we loved the Gianottis Wilderei via Maistra 140, 7504 Pontressina, a wine bar and Restuarant. We went in for the wine, stayed for the dinner. The Swiss make wonderful Pinot Noir, but just don't export it very much. It's on the main street in town. I had to dig thru my receipts to find the name, that how much I liked this place, and we are not foodies.
The info above is what's printed on my receipt; it had indoor and outdoor dining, and is on the side of the street opposite of the Alp Languard lift, so I'd say the side from which you can see the glacier .
Have a great time, I want to go back!

Also note that the Coop store next to the Chesa Mulin closes early on Saturdays and is closed on Sundays; no Diet Coke for me for two days!!!

Gianottis Wilderei
Thanks Pat, we rarely pass up a chance to taste the local wines, wherever we are. We are looking forward to tasting the hard to get Swiss Pinots and the infamous “white merlot” RS raves about. Pontresina is looking better all the time. You didn’t happen to go on the “Waterfall” hike? It sounds amazing.

Our first night in Pontresina, we headed out in search of dinner. Interestingly, there are very few “stand alone” restaurants in Pontresina. Most are located within individual hotels. So, when we came to Gianotti’s Wine Bar/Cafe (which Pat recommended), we went in, but the only seating available was at the tiny bar. It was freezing (late September) so I had soup and salad, while hubby ordered a seasonal speciality, deer. Food was delicious, so we made reservations for the following evening.
We also ate at the bakery across the street from the Chesa Mulin, Grond Cafe. They have delicious desserts as well as light lunch fare.

Where/what is the “Waterfall hike?”
Our two outings while in Pontresina were to the Morteratch Glacier, and the hike from Muottas Muragi to Alp Languard. Both are described in the RS’ Switzerland book.

The new waterfall path is ideal for walks from Pontresina and Morteratsch. It is also ideal as a section on more ambitious hikes. The Cascada da Bernina is on the hiking route of the Via Valtellina (long-distance hiking trail and former mule route
