Do you mean Grindelwald or Gimmewald? Gimmelwald is very close to Murren. Gimmelwald and Murren are absolutely delightful, by the way. I went to Grindelwald as well. It was nice but I liked the other side (Lauterbrunnen, Murren and Gimmelwald) better.

Gimmelwald is a leisurely 20 minute stroll down a paved path, or a brief gondola ride, from Mürren. Not much there either, so hardly seems worth relocating. RS makes it sound like its a remote undiscovered shangri-la but it seems pretty discovered to me.

Hi Linda, stay in Murren and take a walk to Gimmelwald one afternoon to check it out. We've stayed at the Hotel Alpenruh and the Hotel Jungfrau. Both hotels are very nice, clean, good hosts. Honestly, I don't think you can make a mistake with any of the hotels in Murren. Wonderful place, you'll love it! Make your reservations soon!

You don't need to stay in two places, as everything is very close and easily reached in that area. Pick one "home base" and then visit whichever towns you're interested in. As the others have suggested, Mürren would be a great place to stay. You could also stay in Lauterbrunnen, which is the transportation hub for that area.

Gimmelwald is a very small town, with not a lot to do in the evenings. I found Grindelwald too large and touristy, so it wouldn't be my choice of a place to stay in that area. It's also somewhat removed from many of the other locations, which will require more time and money for getting between places.

I agree with Ken's assessment of Grindelwald vs. Gimmewald. If you are going to have a Swiss Travel Pass and therefor, unlimited free transportation between Murren, Gimmelwald, Lauterbrunnen, Schilthorn and Wengen, I'd stay in the Lauterbrunnen valley which would give you more flexibility in terms of visiting all the delightful villages and the waterfalls of the Lauterbrunnen Valley. If you do not plan on getting the pass, I'd stay in Murren. And, Murren is a great place to stay, anyway.

Loved our stay at the Eiger Hotel in Murren. The service and the food were exceptional - salad and squash soup for dinner - absolutely delicious. We had an incredible view of the Eiger, Monch and Black Monch from our room. It was lovely in everyway. We enjoyed our journey to Gimmelwald, the water fountain, and the fantastic (only) restaurant for lunch. Get the cheese and meat board and the soup - fantastic. We did little adventures from Murren and loved every minute of our four (4) nights there. I would stay in Murren and then visit the surrounding areas - ahhh- lovely memories. Definitely get the Swiss Pass to smooth every transport along the way. (we loved having the Swiss Pass- so easy and worth every penny!) Have fun and hopefully are doing carry on only.
