Doing a riverboat cruise and need to stay in Basel one night prior to leaving. Prices are steep. Will take the bus to the train station from airport. Any recommendations for an affordable one night stay near the train station?

Depends what you mean by "affordable". Prices start at around CHF 100, but, if there is a major event in the city that can go up a lot.
The tourist board website is: http://www.basel.com/en this lets you search for hotels in all price ranges.
For hotels at the station (Basel SBB, Basel has 2 "main" stations), I would try hotel Victoria and the St Gotthard, but you pay more for being near the station.
Cheapest "real" hotel (excluding youth hostels etc.) Ibis budget Basel City, "from" CHF 89. This is not far from the station, backing onto the tracks!
All hotels in Basel give free public transport tickets for the city (tram+bus) for the duration of your stay, so getting around is no problem.
Do not be tempted to get a taxi from the airport to your hotel, that will cost CHF 30-40. The ticket for the bus from the airport (2 zone ticket, CHF 4.40) includes buses or trams to anywhere in Basel city, you do not have to pay again.

We did a river cruise, as well, & Hotel Balade was perfect for us...... Recommended on Trip Advisor, and the rate went down prior to our arrival. Close to the river and Oldtown. We made our way to the ship via public bus ( provided by the hotel )..... A fairly easy walk from the bus stop to ship.

Thanks, Chris. I'll try those hotels. I'm hoping to get something under $150.

An easy walk from the SBB Hbf (especially using the back door under the Media Markt) is a nice Ibis (not the budget Ibis) which is also easily reached by 2 tram lines.
I don't know the price for the day you want - it varies depending on what is on in town and particularly at the Messe - but it tends to be good value for money. I've stayed there 4 times and always left happy.
It is also on a direct tram to everywhere in town.

My situation is similar. We leave the ship 14 Dec and fly out of Zurich 16 Dec. Contemplating staying in a centrally-located Basel hotel one night (price $200-300USD) and taking the train to Zurich airport and utilizing a hotel shuttle bus to an airport hotel. (Thanks to a fellow traveller for that tip.) We've been to Zurich a couple of times and don't plan to explore but never to Basel.
Thanks for the link to 36 hours in Basel as I haven't even though that far ahead, lol.
