Are there any hotels/bb/pensions (during July) that you would suggest other than what Rick Steves recommends? We need to stay around $200/night and will be there for just 2 nights.

Did you not like Rick's recommendations, or were they full, or is there some other issue with them? This will help people give you better answers.
I stayed at Hotel des Alpes (found in Rick's book) and would gladly do so again. https://www.desalpes-luzern.ch/en/welcome
However, I found that their website did not list the room I needed, but e-mailing them directly got me the room I wanted with no difficulty. I've encountered this in other Swiss hotels as well. So, if the issue is that there is no availability on the website of a hotel you want, e-mail them directly.

We will be there in July also. I originally booked at Hotel Des Alpes, but after looking at weather patterns decided I would rather have AC so consequently booked at Ameron Hotel Flora. https://www.ameronhotels.com/en/hotel-flora-lucerne. As we haven't stayed there yet can't give personal recommendation yet. On TA it's rated 12 of 66 hotels in Luzern.

We stayed at Drei Konige and liked it very much. The room was modest, but clean, and the breakfast was extensive. The personnel were very helpful and kind. It is in a nice location, a short walk from the river. https://www.drei-koenige.ch/de

I usually stay at Hotel Stern and would definitely recommend it. It's an easy walk from the river and the train station. The rooms are very comfortable and they serve a nice breakfast. However one caveat to mention - I can't remember if they have A/C. I've always managed with just a fan, which they will provide on request. I'm usually there in September so not sure what the weather is like in July.
