Hotels and other recommendations in Basel switzerland???

We will be in Basel for 5 nights prior to leaving on a Viking cruise. Any recommendations for hotels in Basel? We also will be doing some day trips, or even an over night trip. Any recommendations for hotels and sights in Basel? Any recommendations for day trips??

We have traveled all over much of Europe but train, but have not spent much time in Switzerland. We are seniors but we are avid walkers/hikers/travelers.

We like budget friendly places with lots of character .....and usually travel with a Rick Steves guide book in hand..

FYI following the Viking cruise we are going to Riga, Latvia for a week and I left a similar question on the Estonia graffiti wall, if you have any responses to that, I appreciate it also.

Thanks for all and any responses,

Ola

Hi Ola,

You might want to start by deleting the other 3 duplicate posts. Its easy, just hit the little delete button under your name, and only you can do it.
There are lots of day trips close by, Belfort & Colmar France. Luzern, Zurich, Bern are an hour away by train. The Berner Oberland is just about 3 hours and you can be in the high mountains.

Basel isn't exactly a budget-friendly city. It hosts a lot of business travelers, and all those expense accounts tend to keep the going rate for rooms particularly high. I stayed in Hotel Spalenbrunnen, and it would seem to fit the usual Ricknik-requirements, but it would have been too expensive for it's quality and level of service in any other city but Basel. And the smell from the Indian restaurant downstairs permeated the entire hotel. This was just about one of the least expensive hotels I could find in a good location in Basel, and it wasn't particularly cheap.

Basel's a fine enough city, and it has some pretty good museums. But if I had 5 nights in Swizerland, I would spend them somewhere in the Alps, which are only about 90 minutes to the south of the city.

Thanks Sam, I don't know how that happened. Thanks for the good info.

And thanks too, Tom...we are rethinking our plan.

I've stayed very happily at the Ibis. Unfortunately it doesn't meet your "lots of character" requirement but it does do pretty well in the "budget friendly" end of things unless there is a big convention on.

It is really excellently located for convenience, only a few minutes walk from the Hbf, and on 2 main tram lines and another part-time one. Transit to the river, the centre city and Klein Basel is trivial. And if you stay there or any major hotel in Basel you get free travel on the trams and a free transfer from the station or airport on the first day. I'm sure that that would also work from the dock, as long as you have your reservation printed out. Typical Ibis breakfast with a Swiss twist. The rooms are not small and they are comfy. Staff are excellent. I've stayed there 3 times so far.

There is plenty in Basel to keep you busy and really nice nearby towns on both sides of the river.
