I'm looking for hotel/apartment/hostel recommendations for Zurich, Lucerne, and Lugano for early March 2018. Has anyone stayed in an awesome place in a great location?
Start with Steve's guidebooks. Then ask about specific hotels.
We enjoyed Hotel Locanda Castagnola in Lugano. It is a short and convenient bus ride away from the center, large rooms, nice breakfast, great hosts.
Wayne,
Some hotels that I've stayed in and would recommend.....
- Zürich - http://www.walhalla-hotel.ch/en/welcome/
- Lucerne - http://www.sternluzern.ch/en
- Lugano - http://www.pestalozzi-lugano.ch/en/hotel-lugano/ - this provides another view (Italian only) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6m4_TWwacXE
For travel anywhere in Switzerland be sure to budget accordingly as it can be expensive!
We flew in and out of Zürich this past September. The day before our trip home, we stayed at the Radisson Blu which is connected to the airport and 10 minute local train ride to Zürich Hauptbahnhof. There are a lot of shops and restaurants near both. It can be expensive, but we were lucky and found a good deal online. The hotel itself is very nice. Staying there the night before made it very convenient for our flight the next day. It was about a 5 minute walk to check-in.
I had a very nice stay in Luzern at the Hotel des Alpes: https://www.desalpes-luzern.ch/en/welcome
Note that their online booking engine did not show the room I needed, but by e-mailing them directly, I got the room without difficulty.
I just returned from Zurich and can recommend the 25hours Langstrasse hotel, just a short walk from the central train station.
The staff is friendly, our room was large & comfortable with lots of storage, the bar lively and the view over the train tracks goes for miles. We did not hear the trains go by nor the lively young crowd on Langstrasse each weekend. The hotel decor may not be for everyone, but we found it fresh and contemporary.
In lugano I stayed at the hotel Walter Au Lac. It is right on the lake front and rooms have a view of the lake. I have also stayed at the hotel des alpes. If you go, request a room that overlooks the river.
I also had a nice stay at Hotel des Alpes in Lucerne, which is within walking distance from the main train station.
