Hotel Recommendation for Zermatt

Looking for a room in Zermatt in August 2026 and all hotels listed in Rick's guidebook are sold out already! Any suggestions. Would like to stay at around $200/nt US if possible. Thanks.

Single or double? How many nights?
I would start at booking.com to see if anything in your price range is available.

Just picking 3 random nights in August, you will be quite limited with your budget. Up it to $250/nt and there are some good choices.

If we need to go up on the budget we will just have two. Looking for a double room. I was going to look on Booking.com, but hoping someone had one they enjoyed to recommend.

I just saw 3 nts at the Hotel Ambiance for $750. I really like this hotel and the owners.

hey hey April
how many people, what are exact dates or flexible, mobility issues (steps/stairs carrying luggage, what size beds.

booking.com put in filters on left side to see what's left. really think your budget is LOW especially during high season and switzerland is expensive, gets very crowded since many people all want to go to the area which becomes supply & demand. many have sold out for months plus some may not have their calendars opened yet, trying to get thru the holidays. (tripadvisor or trivago)
if you have a place you like book it. waiting around for info from someone where they stayed may be booked which to me is extra research. check out the black friday deals on the site, book now pay later. so many people are traveling, going to same big cities or small cities wanting "reasonably priced/budget/cheap" accomodations. europe is having some of the same difficulties all over the world with money, having to earn a living. good luck, it will happen, happy holidays/gobble gobble

Are you sure the hotels are actually sold out and not just not open for booking yet? I have run into that with some hotels showing no availability because they are not booking those dates yet.

What site are you using to check the hotels? I just went to the 4 hotel websites that are in Rick’s book, and they all have availability in August. I, of course, don’t know your exact dates. Make sure you are checking directly with the hotel website.

The hotel I stayed at in June 2024 has availability, but it’s likely over your budget.

The Hotel Alpenhof:

Good luck!!

The Alpenhof is indeed out of our budget. It is possible like you said that they haven't opened for bookings yet. Hadn't thought of that. I went ahead and booked the Hotel Garni Testa Grigia. It looks decent. At least i have something for now and maybe I'll try some of the other hotels from the book in a month or two. Thanks everyone!

hey hey April
happy to hear you booked something. it's one less stress (stressed spelled backwards is desserts!)
always look at the cancellation policies to rely on, if it suits your fancy you are ahead of the game, don't look back.
see lots of posts later about people scrambling around for rooms/hotels/apartments with so much frustration spending hours on end. what are you plans after that, another city? keep your early research going. enjoy

We're going to Munich from there so I went ahead and booked a room there too. Do you think 4 nights in Zermatt is too many? I don't want to feel rushed.

4 nights in Zermatt is not too much since you cannot guarantee the weather. That will give some leeway in case of rain.

The Testa Grigia is on Bahnhofstrasse, a busy commercial street and an easy walk from the train station. The Walliserkanne restaurant across the street is a decent place to eat.

I had trouble finding a room for 3 in Zermatt in July 2024 for only one night. The Matternhorn Inn in Täsch is where we ended up. The town was not busy and it was a short train ride to Zermatt. For 4 nights, I would still try for something in Zermatt.

Booking.com adds a large fee to the rooms. I booked directly with the hotel in Grindelwald and saved 30% over Booking.com

Booking.com adds a large fee to the rooms

Exactly! There are many articles in the Swiss news regarding this. Here is just one of those:

Around three years ago, the Swiss parliament banned booking platforms
like Booking.com from including price-fixing clauses in their
contracts with hotels. This means hotels are free to offer better
deals on their own websites than those listed on the platform.

I emailed one of the hotels directly and they said they aren't booking August until around April, so I will check back then. Thanks for all the tips!
