Hotel Murren Palace or Hotel Eidelweiss Murren

Planning a first time trip to Murren during the first week of October with an emphasis on hiking. Looking at a superior double room and deciding between the Palace and Eidelweiss. Would appreciate your recommendation or pros/cons for these hotels. Thank you!

I stayed at the Hotel Eidelweiss last year and loved it. Make sure you get a room with a view.

I am unfamiliar with the Palace hotel.

They are a very different class of hotel altogether.

Murren Palace is a 4 star brand new renovation that just opened in December of a very historic hotel and is more in the semi-luxury market with its own spa and higher end restaurant. I imagine once the world figures out about it the prices are going to skyrocket, as they are way under what they should be right now. The only other semi comparable option in Murren is Hotel Eiger. Edelweiss is a 3 star hotel - not bad, but not fancy. The views from Edelweiss are great if you get the valley facing view, but not otherwise. Murren Palace is up on a hill, so the views are towering above Edelweiss. Rooms on the south or southeast facing side of Murren Palace are going to have better views than the north side of the hotel.

I spend my summers living in Murren and the hotels I always recommend are Murren Palace, Hotel Eiger or Hotel Alpenblick.

We spent four nights last week at Hotel Edelweiss and were very happy. Got a room on the cliff side with a balcony and spent lots of time there (except when we were out hiking). Great breakfast and friendly staff (Tina in the evening at the restaurant and Daniel 1/2 owner at breakfast ).

Thank you everyone for your insights!

For Wanderweg, I made the reservation with Murren Palace. I requested a south or southeast facing room/balcony, however, the hotel let me know that for the room type I booked (double room superior), those rooms only face east. Do you have an opinion on east facing views? Thank you!

I don’t think Murren Palace has rooms in the main building facing fully east. My guess is they mean northeast, but I could be wrong. You could ask if the balconies face towards the train station/Wengen/Mannlichen, as I think they’re using the term “east” a bit loosely.

If it’s facing fully east, it would then face the Eiger/Monch/Jungfrau mountains, which I think is only in the new suite building. North faces towards Wengen/Mannlichen, which are mountains, but less dramatic/large/snow capped. The views are lovely in all directions, they’re just most dramatic east/southeast.

@wanderweg, technically, isn't Allmendhubel on the West and the troika of Eiger, Monch, Jungfrau on the East?

Google Maps suggests so.

I’m not sure exactly what you’re asking, as the aspect of the town of Mürren is different than the specific layout aspects of the hotel rooms at Mürren Palace.

The main building rooms at Mürren Palace face slightly northeast (views of Wengen, train station, a little bit of the Eiger/Monch/Jungfrau) and other rooms slightly southwest (views of Allmendhubel, Bryndlii, Breithorn, and a bit of Eiger/Monch/Jungfrau, etc) The new suites building faces east directly towards Eiger/Monch/Jungfrau.

Ultimately, the views in all directions are lovely. The larger Mountain views will be to the east and south. The “smaller” green Mountain views are to the north and west.

Thank you Wanderweg!

For Superman, I did not follow up with the hotel as I agree with Wanderweg that any view will be lovely.

My wife and I just checked into the Hotel Mürren Palace today (June 30) for a three-night stay. We were given room 305 on the northeast corner of the main building on the third floor. There are two windows and a balcony facing 44 degrees northeast and two windows and a balcony facing 135 degrees southeast. (I measured the orientation by placing my iPhone against the outside walls of the room with the compass app open.)

Since June 2, we have visited Milan, Como, Budapest, Vienna, Prague, and Lucerne, staying in four- and five-star hotels. The Mürren Palace ranks as number one or two out of the seven hotels we’ve stayed at, so I’d rate it as a 4.5-star hotel.

The building dates back to the 1870s and still uses radiant heating, but it does have air conditioning. It’s obvious the Mürren Palace has been completely overhauled and updated. The views to the east are spectacular. So far, the staff and food have been excellent, although we have only just checked in and had only one meal—but both experiences were fantastic. Our rate is $405 per night.

Don’t know much about the Hotel Eidelweiss but we walked past it today; it definitely has great views.

Forgot to mention, there’s no air conditioning at Hotel Mürren Palace or any of the hotels in Mürren due to the typically cool mountain climate. If you want a Swiss alpine accommodations with AC, the Belvedere Swiss Quality Hotel in Grindelwald is a modern property known for its comfort and amenities, and is more likely to offer air conditioning compared to traditional alpine lodges. (I could be wrong, there might be other hotels with AC but I’m unaware of them)
