Hotel In Lauterbrunnen switzerland

My husband and I will be traveling to Lauterbrunnen from October 1, 2015 thru October 4 2015. All the hotels in my Rick Steves
book are booked. Does anyone have any suggestions for hotels . Does anyone know why no availability.
Thanks so much

We stayed at the Hotel Jungfrau in Murren and I can highly recommend it. Perhaps you might consider changing to Murren.

Hi, we stayed at Alpenruhe Kulm in Wengen last September - fantastic views over the Lauterbrunnen valley and a wonderful breakfast included. I just checked Booking.com, and there's a few rooms left. We've enjoyed staying at Wengen which is just a quick train up further to Kleine Scheidegg to the Jungfrau.

rose,

I'd suggest doing a search of Lauterbrunnen hotels on Trip Advisor, as there will be more listings there than shown in the guidebook. If you can't find anything with that method, you could also consider hotels in......

  • Mürren (lots of choices - check the guidebook)
  • Gimmelwald (try Pension Gimmelwald or Esther's guest house)
  • Stechelberg (should be a few listed in the guidebook)
  • Wengen

I'm sure you'll be able to find something.

Good luck!

Unless I missed something when I was there, Gimmelwald is tiny. I wouldn't recommend staying there, especially not for 3 nights unless it was the last resort. The only advantage is that it's on the cable car line to the Schilthorn. I was there in mid-June. I saw about a dozen tourists over a two-hour period (lunch and self-guided walking tour), and a couple of locals outside.

Ditto to the recommendation of Hotel Jungfrau in Murren. Great location, great views, great hiking and great food to boot.

And when you say all of the hotels were booked up...what does that mean? Did you actually email or phone them to ask? If you were relying on some hotel booking website then that's a totally unreliable indicator that things are all booked up.

rose,

Tim brings up a good point. Which hotels did you try, and did you contact them directly or use a booking site?

Gimmelwald is very small, but I suggested it as a "last resort". I've stayed there in the past, and didn't mind that at all.

I just want to second (or third) two very important points above.

Don't limit yourself to Lauterbrunnen. Wengen, Mürren, Gimmelwald and Stechelberg will all work for this area (the first two more so than the last two, but in a pinch they can all be used). Cast a wide net. I stayed in Mürren and would prefer to do so again, so that's my personal first choice.

Be SURE to e-mail hotels directly. For all three of my Swiss hotels (Luzern, Mürren, and Lausanne), the hotel's own website booking tool showed no availability for the room I needed. E-mailing the hotels directly not only got me rooms at my first choices in each city, but in two cases, I got a Rick Steves discount by mentioning in the e-mail that I found their hotel in his book. I'm not sure why the online booking engines on the hotels' own websites didn't work for my needs, but they didn't, so don't rely on them for Switzerland - go direct to the source, through the miracle of e-mail!

It's not that the booking engines "don't work". The hotels want to retain "some" control over their inventory and the way to do that is to not release 100% of their rooms to ANY booking site.

I understand that for 3rd party websites like Booking dot com. But in all three of my cases, it was the hotel's OWN website that did not show the room I needed. For a hotel in Berlin (the often-recommended Pension Peters), their site specifically says that if their own booking engine is not showing availability, be sure to e-mail them to check. The Swiss hotel sites didn't say that, but I remembered the point from the Pension Peters, and it worked.

We stayed at the Hotel Bellevue in Murren this summer and loved it. It has a wonderful terrace restaurant and the view from our balcony was spectacular. It also included a nice breakfast. I'd highly recommend it.

We recently stayed at Hotel Oberland in Lauterbrunnen. Good midtown location, near conveniences [ATMs, etc] and the picturesque waterfall off mountain, beautifully illuminated at night. But if I were to do it all over again, I'd choose to stay in Murren where you're two gondola stops from the summit, hiking trails are at your doorstep and offer plenty of options as to terrain and duration, and the local vibe/culture we found to be fantastic. Have a great trip!

We stayed in Hotel Jungfrau Murren. All our hotels we emailed directly. They know exactly what space they have. Strongly preferred staying up in the mountains to Lauterbrunnen. Very charming. It's easy to take funiculars, cable cars up & down each side of the mountain. We hiked down to Lauterbrunnen and took one back up. Also went to Jungfraujoch - not cheap but incredible scenery. Only go if it's clear out.

Yes, even the hotel's OWN website booking engine may not contain all of the available inventory. I speak from experience. Hotels can and do withhold some of their inventory from all web booking engines.
