Hotel close to Train Station in Lucerne?

Hi Travelers,

We (60's) will be arriving into Lucerne via train from Zurich at about 10-11pm on September 3, 2026. Can you please recommend a hotel close to the Train station. Is it safe to walk across the bridge late at night with luggage? Or should we just stay real close to train station?

Thank you in advance for your suggestions and advice,
Mary

I have twice stayed at the Ameron Luzern Hotel Flora.

It is about a five minute walk from the train station and down the street from the Chapel Bridge. It's on the station side of the bridge.

Lucerne, and Swiss cities in general, are very safe.
And the train station is wedged in right in the middle of the city, so frankly, most central hotels are close to the station. Hotel des Alpes is often recommended (not been); Weisses Kreuz is very nice; there's a bunch of good hotels right across the street from the station as well. One I don't recommend is Hotel Stern (apparently just rebranded as a boutique hotel), rooms in my party were extremely variable in quality.

which bridge with luggage? The big road bridge would be no problem, the Chapel Bridge is quite narrow and I would prefer to not do it with luggage. Both are regardless of time. Luzern is a nice place to be.

Your arrival time is a bit vague - kind of like a flight arrival. Swiss trains tend to run on time so you don't need to leave time for delays.

You won’t have to walk over the Chapel Bridge—it’s not on a direct route from the train station to any of the hotels. It’s the only bridge I can imagine you might be concerned about because of its enclosed design.

I (same age as you) would not hesitate to do this - alone or with my husband, either way I would feel safe.

Thank you everyone for your advice - I was thinking the Chapel Bridge but now I see we wouldn't be going over that one to get to a hotel across the way from the train station.

Hotel des Alpes is very nice and indeed a short walk directly across from the rail station main entrance. A group of six of us arrived at the rail station, and, not knowing how close it was, asked a taxi driver to take us there. He laughed and pointed at the hotel saying you will be there faster than I can take you.

Thank you Stan, Hotel des Alpes is the hotel we've decided to go with. However, I noticed there was a comment on their website where the front desk is only open for check-in until 9:30pm. I have emailed the hotel to ask if there are options for checking in later in the evening since we won't be getting into Lucerne until about 10-1030pm. Any experience with a late arrival? I have not heard from the hotel yet.

FYI - I did hear back from the hotel Des Alpes and they will accommodate a late check-in and leave the keys in a box for their guests.
