Hotel Baren, St. Moritz

Has anyone stayed here?
I would love to know how long the walk is to get to the hotel from the train station and if you enjoyed your stay.
We will be getting two double rooms. I have searched every booking website and emailed hotels and this appears to be the most reasonable cost for our family of two adults and two 19 year olds (within walking distance of the station). While we would love to share a room with one double bed and two twins, the only one I found available was 100 franks more for the night.

I tried Pontresina and the cost was more by at least 50 franks a night.

This is a one night stay after Glacier express (seat reservations made) and before taking the regional train to Tirano and continuing onto Varenna(Fiumelatte).

Thank you for any input you have.

How much are you paying for the two double rooms? Over 400 CHF?

You might have a look at Laagers Garni in Samedan. They have just four rooms above a bakery, but one of them in an apartment that would sleep four very comfortably. I believe it is 350 CHF in high season for four adults.

We found it very reasonable in price compared to other lodging in the area.

The quote I have is 384. So not much more. We picked St. Moritz because after a day on the train we could take a walk around the lake for some exercise or we could swim in the pool at that hotel if the weather is bad. Need to move after sitting that long and planned sitting the next day.

That is a good point. A lake to walk around after the long train day is an appealing feature. As is the pool.

But one more thing to consider is that we saved a lot by cooking our own dinner in the apartment. Swiss restaurants are quite expensive, especially in resort areas. We saved around 100 CHF over two nights by self-catering rather than going out for dinner. The selection at the local grocery was not great, but we made do.

You will love the train ride over the Bernina Pass. The views are wonderful, especially as you switchback down from the Pass into the valley below.

Yes, we have made due a lot. This trip has 13 nights in Switzerland, we have 10 in apartments and 3 in hotels. We will also be in Italy for 6 nights in apartments and 1 night in a hotel this trip. I do usually cook something most nights because of costs and 4 people (with very different taste buds) picking one restaurant is not always easy.

Lots to consider and nothing is ever totally perfect, finding the best for what is budgeted is driving me crazy.
