Hotel Alpenrose or Hotel Bellevue in Wengen?

My husband and I are staying in Wengen for 4 nights in June, and after narrowing down our hotel choices to 2 options, we are having a hard time making the final decision! Has anyone stayed at either Hotel Alpenrose or Hotel Bellevue? The rooms we are looking at are in a similar price range once we include half-board, so that isn't a big deciding factor.

I really like the look of the rooms at Alpenrose, but the views from the Bellevue are just stunning. Is one or the other more convenient, or is there a significant different in the food?

Walking is not a problem for us, so small hills or a location few minutes walk outside of town isn't a big deal. We'd love to hear your thoughts! Thanks!

I would go for Hotel Alprenrose in Wengen. It has a wonderful breakfast, views are stunning , and it makes a great starting point to head to Jungfrauch.

My comment is on your choice of HalfBoard - there are some excellent restaurants in the area. Why limit yourself to only your hotel? I think it would be very unfortunate to limit your experiences even though the price may be enticing.

We have stayed at Alpenrose several times and liked it. The meals (breakfast and dinner) are very good. If you will be there in early June you may see the cows headed to a higher pasture. We saw them on our last stay there--they paraded right in front of the hotel. Try for a front room with balcony. A Coop store is very close to the hotel

It wasn’t one of your options, but we have stayed a couple times at the Hotel Caprice and will be staying there again in June. Lovely
Boutique hotel, so you are not overwhelmed with groups. And stunning views from their balconies.

And I agree with the other poster about half board. You night prefer to have some flexibility for your meals.

Half the fun of traveling is wandering but nice cafes / restaurants, browsing the menus, maybe choose to be seated and dine there. Maybe you’d prefer just to have a nice bottle of wine with cheese and fruit for dinner....none of which is possible if you’ve already committed to half board. The quality of food for half board is not the issue. The issue is your own freedom to dine where and when you want.

Thank you for all your thoughts! We are leaning toward the Alpenrose, as it sounds like it has some wonderful reviews.

I appreciate the points made about half-board. Part of the appeal is certainly the price - I know meals can be extremely expensive in Switzerland. This segment is just a short part of a 6 week adventure, so we do need to be somewhat conservative in our food budget. We even considered doing an airbnb and making our own meals most nights, but that sounded even less fun than half-board!

I will certain rethink half-board though, and I'll also check with the hotel and see what their policy is if we would add it but choose to dine outside the hotel one evening.

Half board at a small hotel with a good kitchen (like the Alpenrose) is a great value in Switzerland. We had some amazing 4-course dinners at the Baeren when we stayed there. One main course was lake fish with coconut-lime risotto that was delicious.

In my experience, most hotels will let you mix it up—-dinner in the hotel on half board on some nights, and dining elsewhere on others. But we have only done that in the Dolomites, not in Switzerland. You can always ask.
