Hi all! We are wanting to establish either Bern or Lucerne as a home base for traveling to Berner Oberland. Should we stay in Lucerne and make both Bern and some of Berner Oberland a day trip? Or should we stay in both Bern and Lucerne? We could also use Bern as a home base and do day trips to Lucerne and other places. Any help is appreciated!
We've been to both very recently. No contest . . . LUCERNE! It's in the mountains and on the water. It is stunning.
IMO, Luzern, though I did enjoy Bern. There are contrasting opinions, and there was just a recent post on this subject that you might do a search for. We took a day trip from Luzern to Bern and enjoyed it very much. I think if you want to visit BO, you'd be best off staying there. Wengen, Lauterbrunnen, or Murren.
Yes, Luzern is in a beautiful mountain & lake setting. Bern is not in the mountains. But I have to say, if you plan to focus on the Berner Overland, why not stay there? Interlaken would be a good hub, or, even better, stay up in the mountain valley of Lauterbrunnen., or the mountain towns of Wengen or Mürren.
